Job description

Grove Street Academy (GSA) is a school located on the Children's Home of Kingston campus in Kingston, NY. This school provides necessary educational services to both day treatment and residential students, ages eight to twenty-one, grades 4th through 12th. GSA is an 853 NYSED certified school, specializing in small departmental and self-contained classes, and provides students and their families with a system of interventions and supports that are not available within the public education sectors.

The Physical Education Teacher will coordinate and provide developmentally appropriate educational services to students whose abilities differ from their peers. Directs, monitors, and mentors teacher's assistants working with students who have challenging behaviors. The Physical Education Teacher provides physical education therapy services for individuals and small groups according to IEP recommendations. Demonstrates knowledge of developmental levels and of disabling conditions using a variety of techniques and equipment.

Position Responsibilities:
  • Plan and deliver engaging, effective instruction aligned with NYS Learning Standards and incorporating best practices for students with disabilities grades 4-12.
  • Plan and implement lesson plans for teaching health & wellness & physical fitness techniques, sports playing, and living a healthy and active lifestyle.
  • Transfer mastery of content to students by leveraging their background knowledge and experiences.
  • Implement a variety of teacher strategies to facilitate learning amongst diverse learners and social justice topics.
  • Use student engagement as a core component of classroom management system.
  • Develop and differentiate instructional materials to support student learning.
  • Supervise students.
  • Manage student behaviors.
  • Complete and submit lesson plans using school-wide format.
  • Establish effective classroom routines and assist in daily school operations.
  • Review and enact services and accommodations as outlined by students' Individual Education Plan (IEP) and Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP).
  • Communicate with colleagues, supervisors, parents, and residential staff as needed regarding student progress.
  • Monitor student progress and provide remediation or enrichment as appropriate.
  • Maintain accurate record of student performance.
  • Report incidents as needed and in accordance with office protocol.
  • Participate in CSE meetings, and monitor student progress toward IEP goals.
  • Complete required documentation as required by administration, including treatment team forms and BIP progress monitoring notes.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by administration such as breakfast duty, bus duty, and ISS duty.
  • Implement Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI) techniques effectively and consistently.
  • Participate and promote the school's Positive Behavior Interventions Supports (PBIS) program.
  • Attend all trainings and meetings as required by administration.
Essential Skills and Experience:
  • Ability to speak, read, and write English fluently, which allows full communication with agency staff and 3rd parties.
  • Ability to perform highly exacting work, complex in nature, and to exercise sound judgment.
  • Ability to evaluate facts, interpret results, and make recommendations.
  • Ability to use sound judgment while following agency policies, practices, and procedures.
  • Possess a valid driver license with a driving record acceptable to CHK's insurance carrier and possess the ability to drive agency vehicles to other agency sites and places for training purposes.
Education, Training and Experience:
  • Current NYS Certification in Education; Special Education preferred.
  • Experience working with students with various cultural backgrounds.
  • Minimum of two years teaching experience in an urban public school or charter school setting preferred.
Physical Demands and Work Environment:
  • Must be able to lift up to 45 pounds at a time.
  • Must be able to kneel, sit, stand, crawl, push, and pull to assist and teach children throughout the day.
