We are seeking a Photonics Engineer in our New Mexico Location.

All applicants for safety-sensitive positions will be required to submit to a pre-employment drug test.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Characterize individual photonic components, optical output of photonic chips, and overall photonic circuit performance. Develop and use high-sensitivity measurement techniques to evaluate the optical output of photonic chips for suitability.
  • Work with photonic designers and fabrication team to verify design performance and understand the consequences of fabrication variation.
  • Collaborate with a diverse team, including atomic physicists, engineers, and fabrication experts, to validate unprecedented integrated photonic technology.
  • Plan, design, and build new optical characterization equipment to meet high-sensitivity requirements for an ion-trap based quantum computer.
  • Develop new concepts for metrology testbeds to evaluate active/alternative photonic materials and architectures.
  • Communicate ground-breaking results internally and externally through publications and presentations.
YOU MUST HAVE:
  • 3+ years of experience with the design and implementation of optical experiments, including optoelectronic devices (e.g., lasers and photodetectors), optical fiber, optical components (e.g., lenses, mirrors, polarizers), and scientific software.
  • Must be a U.S. Person, defined as U.S. citizen, permanent resident, green card holder, or someone granted asylum or refugee status, due to contractual requirements.
  • Due to national security requirements, candidates must not be nationals of the People’s Republic of China or Russia unless they are U.S. citizens.
WE VALUE:
  • Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD in Physics or Engineering preferred.
  • 3+ years experience with photonic integrated circuit design and/or testing (advanced degree inclusive).
  • Ability to communicate clearly and facilitate exchange of key details among diverse team members.
  • Knowledge of on-chip photonics, fiber-to-chip coupling, and modulation techniques.
  • Experience with nanophotonic design using simulation tools such as FDTD, FEM, or optical mode solvers (Lumerical, COMSOL, RCWA, RSoft, or similar).
  • Experience with micro- and nano-fabrication techniques (electron beam, photolithography, etching, SEM, wafer handling, cleanroom practices).
  • Proficiency in scientific coding, data analysis, and visualization software (e.g., MATLAB, Python, Mathematica, Origin, Igor).
  • Some knowledge of trapped-ion quantum computers.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, with published research results.
Estimated Salary Wage: $130,000 - $160,000 annually
