Job summary

Aegiq Ltd. in Sheffield seeks a Photonic Integrated Circuit Design Engineer to create high-performance PICs for next-generation quantum computing systems. You will model, simulate and lay out photonic devices and larger circuits, aiming for manufacturability and scalable performance.

You will partner with quantum science, systems, and hardware teams and external foundry partners to translate requirements into fabrication-ready designs, from concept through validation and integration.

Qualifications

• Degree in Physics, Electrical Engineering, Photonics or related discipline (Master/PhD welcome but not essential).
• Experience designing, simulating and laying out PICs, with foundry tapeout and validation preferred.
• Strong modelling skills across frequency- and time-domain methods for design optimisation.

Responsibilities

• Design, model and optimise passive/active photonic components (waveguides, couplers, phase shifters, modulators, resonators, photodetectors).
• Develop larger photonic circuits and perform layout verification for tapeout.
• Collaborate with electronics, systems eng., and foundry partners to integrate photonics and drive electronics.
• Develop test plans and validate fabricated devices through measurements and comparison with simulations.
• Translate quantum computing requirements into practical PIC designs and drive through fabrication.
