Job Opportunity: Phlebotomist

An exciting opportunity has arisen for experienced and enthusiastic individuals to join our Phlebotomy Team at The Princess Royal Hospital, Telford; The Royal Shrewsbury Hospital, Shrewsbury; Whitchurch Community Hospital, Whitchurch; and the new Clinical Diagnostics Centre at Hollinswood House, Telford. The role involves working on wards, outpatient clinics, and in the community, with Telford as the main base.

We are advertising for 3 full-time posts, each working 37.5 hours over 7 days across various phlebotomy locations. This is a cross-site role requiring travel to different sites as operational needs dictate. The working hours are Monday to Friday, with four days from 08:00 to 17:00, and one day from 08:00 to 13:30, within the current operating hours of 08:00-17:00 on weekdays and 08:00-12:00 on weekends and bank holidays. These hours are under review and may change in the future.

The ideal candidate must have previous experience as a Phlebotomist, excellent communication skills, the ability to work under pressure, and a meticulous approach to data recording. An approachable manner and the flexibility to meet travel requirements are essential. Previous supervisory experience is also required.

Shifts will vary according to service needs, so flexibility is crucial.

Main Duties
  • Collect blood samples via venipuncture from adults in community, ward, and outpatient settings.
  • Collect blood samples from children aged 12 months to 18 years.
  • Record and label samples following SOPs.
  • Gather relevant statistics and enter data into databases.
  • Deliver samples to the laboratory by hand, vacuum system, or transport services.
  • Apply health and safety, clinical risk management, and quality control responsibilities.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work environment.
  • Work various shifts, including weekends and bank holidays, on a rota basis.
  • Cover for team members during absences as needed.
  • Update skills through ongoing training and maintain a personal achievement record.
  • Organize rotas for all shift patterns across wards, outpatient, and community settings.
  • Supervise phlebotomists, booking team, and volunteers.
  • Update and maintain accurate statistics.
