Overview

The Phlebotomy Department based at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital (NNUH) is part of the Eastern Pathology Alliance (EPA), a managed Pathology network involving NNUH, the James Paget University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Kings Lynn. The Phlebotomy department is responsible for the provision of a phlebotomy service at NNUH only, covering daily ward-based phlebotomy on a 7 day per week basis as well as outpatient phlebotomy on the NNUH site. All staff are expected to act as a role model to others and demonstrate NNUH\'s PRIDE values of People focused, Respect, Dedication, Integrity and Excellence.

Main duties

This is a full time substantive opportunity in a leadership role within a busy hospital department. We are seeking a candidate from a nursing background who can apply clinical skills to support the phlebotomy service and develop leadership skills in managing a busy service.

The post holder will act as technical and operational lead for Phlebotomy at NNUH and be the primary point of contact for technical and clinical advice and expertise. The role ensures provision of a high quality phlebotomy service, coordinating the service and liaising with multiple users across the Trust. The phlebotomy manager is line manager for a team of approximately 40 people and coordinates a sub team of approximately 10 bank staff.

Job responsibilities

The following skills and experience are essential:

  • Communicate department and Trust initiatives and issues to staff via regular meetings, one-to-one discussions and written communication (electronic or printed).
  • Represent Phlebotomy at Trust and regional level by attending meetings, collaborating on service improvement projects, developing business cases and presenting to senior management and external agencies.
  • Demonstrate tact, diplomacy and persuasive skills in enquiries within the Trust and with other NHS providers and external agencies.
  • Work with Senior EPA management, Trust management and other stakeholders to develop plans and implement projects related to phlebotomy services.
  • Process and communicate complex data to facilitate dissemination and collection of information within the department and develop effective communication processes.
  • Define data collection strategies using various methods to measure service demands, analyse improvements and develop strategies for change.

Qualifications and experience

Essential qualifications and experience:

  • Level 5 Qualification in management or equivalent experience in a management role.
  • Trained and competent to perform venepuncture, with knowledge of venepuncture techniques and other clinical skills.
  • Registered Nurse (Level 1).
  • Experience in recruitment and interviewing.
  • Experience of procurement.
  • Experience in setting and planning rosters and organising staff.
