Phlebotomy Training

Job description

We have 1 full-time (37.5 hours) position available in the phlebotomy department at Walsall Manor Hospital. The post holder will carry out phlebotomy (blood sample collection) in inpatient wards, outpatient departments, and the antenatal clinic. We also cover two external sites, for which training will be provided.

We operate a Monday to Sunday service, and the post holder will participate in a 7-day rota, including bank holidays. If you are enthusiastic, flexible, and take pride in your work, this could be a great opportunity for you.

An opportunity has arisen for experienced phlebotomists or individuals who have completed phlebotomy training to join the Phlebotomy Service at Walsall Manor Hospital.

You will be responsible for collecting blood samples from inpatients and outpatients. You should demonstrate the ability to work independently and meet tight deadlines in a pressurized environment. Physical ability to walk, bend, and handle medium loads over extended periods is required.

Note: We may close the vacancy early if we receive a high volume of applications.

Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust is an integrated trust and the only provider of NHS acute care in Walsall, serving a population of 286,700. The trust offers a range of inpatient and outpatient services at the Manor Hospital and in the community. The hospital features state-of-the-art facilities, including a Critical Care Unit, Neonatal Unit, Obstetric Theatre, and an upcoming Urgent and Emergency Care Centre.

We welcome applications from people of BME backgrounds and individuals with disabilities, as these groups are currently underrepresented at senior levels. We value diversity and are committed to equality in recruitment.

We support flexible working arrangements for all employees and applicants.

Applicants who are settled workers and meet the requirements will be prioritized for the role over non-residents, unless the role qualifies for sponsorship under a PhD-level code.

Key Responsibilities

The post-holder will undertake phlebotomy to facilitate timely investigations and treatments for adult patients. They will work independently, with guidance from the phlebotomy supervisor and manager as needed.

Main Duties and Responsibilities
  • Perform phlebotomy on patients in inpatient, outpatient, antenatal, and external sites as required.
  • Communicate sensitively with patients and their representatives, including distressed or aggressive individuals.
  • Accurately identify patients and label blood samples safely.
  • Exercise autonomy within professional boundaries, verifying and validating specimen collection from ward sheets.
