Main duties of the job

The Phlebotomist will work under the direction of the lead nurse and as part of the practice multidisciplinary team, performing venepuncture as requested by the clinical team for the entitled patient population. The role will also involve supporting the nursing team as required.

Job responsibilities

  • Obtain patient consent prior to blood collection.
  • Perform venepuncture in accordance with practice protocols.
  • Correctly label, package, store, and log samples.
  • Maintain accurate patient records on the clinical IT system.
  • Resolve discrepancies in specimen logs.
  • Ensure timely transportation of samples to the laboratory.
  • Maintain effective liaison with NHS Trust laboratory staff.
  • Work collaboratively with the nursing team, seeking guidance where necessary for patient-related matters.
  • Participate in practice audits as directed by the audit lead.
  • Support local initiatives to improve service delivery and patient care.
  • Participate in shared learning activities within the practice.
  • Complete opening and closing procedures in accordance with the duty rota.
  • Follow confidentiality, equality, diversity, and inclusion policies.
  • Adhere to health and safety, infection control, and security procedures.
  • Participate in continuous quality improvement activities.
  • Maintain professional conduct and comply with practice protocols.
  • Work effectively as part of the multidisciplinary team.

  • Relevant qualification in venepuncture.
