Job description

Hull Family Practice is a busy teaching practice serving 38,000 patients. We are looking to recruit an experienced qualified phlebotomist to join our large friendly Nursing team. The hours are negotiable. This is an exciting opportunity to join a well-established and high-performing practice to improve the service we offer to patients.

You will provide a friendly, confident, and professional service to our patients. You will be able to demonstrate good communication and organizational skills. You will have the ability to work both independently and as part of a wider team.

Main duties of the job

The postholder will be an experienced Phlebotomist who participates in providing a quality blood collection service.

The successful candidate must be enthusiastic and organized, able to work flexibly, and effectively as part of a large team. Previous NHS or medical setting experience is preferred but not essential for the right candidate.

Hull Family Practice is a large, friendly teaching practice serving 38,000 patients within the East and West Hull area. We have 10 GP Partners, Nurse Practitioners, Pharmacists, Pharmacy Technicians, Physiotherapists, Nurses/HCA's, and a large administrative team including receptionists.

Job responsibilities

To provide an efficient service to all patients and Doctors, ensuring work is prioritized and completed within deadlines. Confidentiality and GDPR adherence are essential.

You will be part of a Primary Healthcare team, drawing blood from patients under clinical supervision of Practice Nurses, following evidence-based clinical governance principles.

Responsibilities include:

  • Ensuring patient comfort and obtaining their consent for blood collection.
  • Collecting blood samples according to training and procedures.
  • Storing samples appropriately.
  • Labeling samples accurately and legibly to confirm patient identity.
  • Checking patient identification against requests and confirming with patients when possible.
  • Recording blood collection in patient records.
  • Dispatching samples to laboratories promptly.
  • Reporting anomalies to senior staff.
  • Notifying the clinical team of significant patient issues.
  • Liaising with administrative staff.

  • Respect patient confidentiality and privacy at all times, handling sensitive information appropriately.
  • Access to confidential information is only for authorized personnel and must be protected according to practice policies.

Person Specification
Qualifications
  • NVQ level 2 in Health and Social Care or equivalent.
  • Phlebotomy training with approved equipment.
  • Ability to work under pressure with minimal supervision.
  • Flexibility for covering shifts due to holidays or sickness.
  • Excellent customer care skills.
  • Knowledge of infection prevention control.
  • NHS Care Certificate.
  • NHS Healthcheck training.
  • Experience with SystmOne preferred.
