Firs House Surgery are looking for a caring, reliable and enthusiastic experienced Phlebotomist to join our friendly Nursing Team.

You will play an important role in providing a professional, reassuring and positive experience for patients attending for blood tests.

We are looking for someone who is patient-focused, approachable and reliable, with a positive attitude and a genuine commitment to providing high-quality patient care. Experience working with the public and excellent customer service skills are essential.

You will run planned blood-taking clinics, make patients feel at ease and make sure samples are labelled and handled correctly. You will work closely with our clinical, reception and administration teams.

An immediate start is available, but we are happy to wait for the right person.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will be able to provide a safe, reliable and friendly phlebotomy service for our patients.

• Take blood samples from patients in line with practice procedures and your training
• Confirm the patients identity and obtain consent before each procedure
• Label, record, store and prepare samples correctly for collection
• Keep the clinical room clean, safe and ready for the next patient
• Maintain stock and report when supplies need ordering
• Recognise when a patient is unwell and seek clinical help promptly
• Use the clinical system to provide the relevant paperwork for the laboratory
• Record activity accurately in the patients clinical record
• Follow infection prevention, sharps and clinical waste procedures
• Treat patients with kindness, dignity and respect
• Work with colleagues to keep clinics running safely and on time

Responsible to: Administration - Practice Manager, Clinical - Lead Practice Nurse

Location: Firs House Surgery and 42 Telegraph Street

Salary: £12-83 13.24 (depending on experience)

Hours: Wednesday, Thursday and Friday 8:30 17:00 (with 1 hour for lunch)

Working under the direct supervision of the HCA and Nurse teams and strictly in accordance with specific practice guidelines and protocols, the post holder will be responsible for performing venepuncture and near patient testing to obtain blood samples from patients as directed by other members of the clinical team.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

• Ensuring that the patient is as comfortable and relaxed as possible and confirming their consent to the collection of a blood sample
• Collection of sample(s) of blood in accordance with training and procedures
• Ensuring samples are stored in appropriate containers
• Accurate, legible labelling of all samples to confirm patient identity
• Checking patient identification against clinician request and confirming with patient whenever possible
• Recording collection of blood sample in patient record in accordance with practice procedure
• Ensuring that samples are dispatched to the appropriate laboratories in a timely fashion.
• Ensuring that anomalies are reported to a senior member of staff
• Notifying the appropriate clinician of any significant patient issues
• Liaising with and assisting members of the administrative team
• Prepare and maintain environments and equipment before, during and after patient care interventions
• Assist in raising awareness of health and well-being, where appropriate
• Give accurate and appropriate information to patients and groups within own competence
• To gain the underpinning knowledge and practical skills to administer basic life support if necessary
• Chaperone and assist patients where appropriate according to practice policy
• Support the HCA and Nurse team for various tasks if and when required.
