Job summary

University of Birmingham is offering a fully funded PhD three-year studentship in the School of Chemistry in collaboration with the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl).

The project focuses on supramolecular host systems for capturing and catalysing the decomposition of chemical warfare agents, using a mix of classical and quantum mechanics simulations, cheminformatics and machine learning. Stipend ~£26k/year, home student rate, with conference/travel funds.

Qualifications

  • First or upper second honours degree in chemistry, materials science, or a related field.
  • Strong interest in computational chemistry and materials modelling.
  • Familiarity with Python and Git is advantageous.
  • Post is subject to Dstl security clearances.

Responsibilities

  • Develop a physics-informed computational workflow for capturing and destroying chemical warfare agents.
  • Collaborate across Tarzia and Michalchuk groups and with Dstl; contribute to software development.
  • Apply low-cost quantum mechanical methods to model non-covalent interactions in supramolecular hosts.
