Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and well-motivated Pharmacy Technician to join our expanding oncology clinical trials team. This is an exciting time to join as we are looking to expand our early phase clinical trial portfolio and develop ATMP studies within our state of the art, multi-million-pound technical services unit.

You will be based in the Pharmacy Clinical Trials Department at Weston Park Hospital and will work under the management of the Senior Pharmacy Technician – Clinical trials.

Work across our hospital sites may be required in this role.

Pharmacy plays a vital role in clinical research to safeguard patients, healthcare professionals and the Trust by ensuring that clinical trial material and Investigational Medicinal Products (IMPs) are appropriate for use and are procured, handled, stored and used safely and correctly.

The successful applicant will be supporting the Pharmacy Clinical Trials team in the delivery of both commercially and non-commercially sponsored studies, ensuring all current legislation, MHRA guidelines and Good Clinical Practice standards are met. Improving patient care through research and innovation is vital to everything we do. The post holder must be able to work with medical and nursing staff and other health care professionals.

Main duties of the job

You will have a varied role which will include clinical trial set-up, maintenance and close-down activities, ordering, receipt and accountability of clinical trial stock, monitoring of storage areas, writing and reviewing standard operating procedures and administrative work. You will be required to communicate with a wide range of professionals via telephone, email and face-to face.

No previous experience in clinical trials is needed as full training will be provided.

Qualifications
  • NVQ level 3 or BTEC level 3 Diploma in Pharmaceutical Science (or equivalent)
  • Registration as a Pharmacy Technician with the GPhC (General Pharmaceutical Council)
Further Training
  • Further training in clinical trials e.g. GCP, EU directive etc
Experience
  • Experience in hospital pharmacy
  • Clinical trials experience
  • Has excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Able to articulate complex information clearly to colleagues and patients and carers
  • Has understanding of range of work practices and procedures requiring theoretical knowledge acquired through training and experience
  • Has excellent keyboard skills and general IT knowledge. Capable of using Word, Excel, Microsoft Outlook and various applications such as CMM, BMS Continuum, Chemocare
  • Able to check the work of others, identifying discrepancies and ensuring corrections are made
  • To be role model for junior technicians
  • Evidence of ongoing Continuing Professional Development
  • Able to analyse and interpret a range of information to solve technical problems, especially relating to clinical trials
  • Able to discuss issues concerning oncology clinical trials with research staff, both local and from the pharmaceutical industry
