About us

Elsdale Street Surgery originated from a tiny surgery building in Lauriston Road where Dr. Colin Franklin, a single handed GP, practiced for many years. When Dr. Franklin retired in June 1990, his list of patients (approx. 2000) was transferred to Dr. Heather Charles. She took over the list in November 1990 and continued practicing from Lauriston Road until plans to refurbish Elsdale Street Health Centre were being made and carried out so that the Surgery could move into it.

The original Surgery was sited close to Victoria Park, which has a high proportion of professional people. The Practice area also covers a large area of council accommodation, mainly low to to medium-rise blocks of flats. As a consequence, there is a high number of young families, many being single parents, on our patient list. This is also reflected on the fact that there are many more 25-35 year old female patients registered with us than the national average.
