PGME Clinical Education Fellow - Supporting IMG and AMU

The post is a one-year fixed term contract. It will be based at the Great Western Hospital Swindon (GWH) This is an exciting and unique opportunity for a trainee with an interest in education. The post will be 50% in Acute Medicine and 50% Post Graduate Medical Education. The post will also include the opportunity to be involved in the exciting field of simulation.

This post would typically suit a ST3 - ST4 level doctor at the time of appointment, such as those wishing to undertake further training in medical education as part of an Out of Programme Experience (OOPE) from their Specialist training programme. Opportunity to undertake PG Certification in Clinical Education.

To assist the Director Medical Education and relevant clinical specialty in their educational strategy to design, develop, deliver & evaluate Postgraduate training programmes which encompass essential clinical skills, simulation training, quality improvement work and trainee support including International Medical Graduates

Main duties of the job

1. Provision of clinical education for postgraduate clinical trainees including simulation (where relevant) andclinical skills for trainees with a specific role supporting the International Medical Graduate consultantlead.2. To take part in on-going research projects, or undertake original work under supervision with the aim ofproducing peer-reviewed publications and presentations at national and international meetings in relationto speciality.3. Bedside and classroom teaching of postgraduate trainees.4. Coordination of post graduate trainees' teaching opportunities.5. Supporting Clinical Skills Teaching and ward based assessment to post graduate trainees.6. Evaluation of teaching in conjunction with the relevant administrator.7. Undertaking any training that is identified as necessary for the candidate to teach effectively

Job responsibilities

8. Promote and deliver simulation as an effective educational tool.9. Provide a source of support, training and specialist advice to IMG trainees as and when required.10. Lead on the provision of mentorship to incoming IMG as well as giving informal support to help integrationsocially with their peers / colleagues.Patient Care11. The post would be divided 50/50 Direct Clinical Care and Educational activity12. Work clinically as part of the team within Acute Medicine.

  • Substantive NHS experience in Acute Medicine
  • Experience of the ARCP process
  • Experience of using e-portfolios / appraisal systems for evidence collection
  • Experience of Quality Improvement and / audit
  • Experience of engaging with quality assessment of postgraduate medical training programmes such as the GMC trainee survey and National Educational and Training Survey
  • Experience of teaching postgraduate medical resident doctors on training programmes
  • Representing the views and needs resident doctors
Knowledge
  • Ability to apply sound clinical knowledge and judgement to problems
  • Recognition of, and ability to undertake the initial management of an acutely ill patient
  • Excellent IT skills. Conceptual and analytical skills. Keen to innovate and take on new challenges
  • Attention to detail in all professional tasks
  • To have an interest in supporting doctors in training and medical education
  • Ability to design and deliver bedside teaching and simulation.
