Job Description:

JOB REF

JOB REF

: GN0625

I’m a 53 years young man looking for Personal Assistants/Carers for my support team. I suffered a hypoxic brain injury in an avalanche while snowboarding in the Alps, which has mainly left me wheelchair bound, speech impaired, and with the medical condition Action Myoclonus / Lance Adams Syndrome. I take medication to control my jerks / shakiness and to suppress the likelihood of having an epileptic seizure. Apparently, I had one when they defrosted me back at Grenoble hospital. That’s been the only time, but you will need to be aware of the signs on epilepsy and protocols followed immediately.

I’m not being able to do most things due to my jerks, I do try to be active as possible, often do 5k around my local park in a wheelchair. I also cycle on my trike, when my feet are clipped into my pedals I can still go quite far (25km-ish) and reasonably fast, I walk with a stroller, but do need to be kept an eye on. Eating is troublesome too, I have Dysphagia, so you’ll need to watch I don’t choke. It’s the simple things, or to be more specific, the fiddly things I struggle with, opening letters, putting toothpaste on a toothbrush, cooking is definitely out, I can’t be trusted with any sharp or hot things. I’m ok at transferring to and from my wheelchair, can toilet on my own now I’m a big boy! You will be working on a Sunday which isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, for 10 hours and covering for my senior carer should he ever fall ill, or take annual leave. Ideally, I’m looking for someone who is physically fit, who can cycle, cook, puts up with my eclectic music taste and someone who’s up for doing interesting ‘stuff’ in the city, or my area. There is likely to be a fair amount of downtime too if I’ve had a hectic day as I get fatigued. Maybe someone who can advise what to do with my receding hairline? I have a daft sense of humour, hopefully you do too!

You must have previous experience in a similar role which must include supporting individuals with disabilities, that will demonstrate the initiative necessary for the role. I’m 179cm and 84kg, and so require carers who can manage me through a combination of physical support and persuasion, and who can take the initiative necessary to facilitate enjoyment of my daily life.

You will receive:

  • £16.00 per hour
  • A pensionif eligible
  • 5.6 weeks per year annual leave pro rata
  • Full certificated training on all aspects of the role
  • Hours available:

  • A minimum of 10 hours per week worked on a Sunday, usually between 9.30am and 7.30pm
  • There may be the opportunity to work additional hours on occasions in relation to holidays and sickness
  • What’s Required:

  • Provide assistance with all aspects of personal care
  • Previous experience in a similar role which must include supporting individuals with disabilities, that will demonstrate the initiative necessary for the role
  • An enhanced DBS check, the cost will be met by the Employer
