Job summary

Disability North in York is seeking a kind, patient Personal Assistant to support a 7-year-old boy. You will spend time with him, help him enjoy activities, explore the community and have fun while building confidence.

The role involves personal care, following his care plan, tube feeding, and using Makaton to communicate. Some days at home, some out in the community; training provided and you’ll become someone he looks forward to seeing. Applicants must have work permission in the UK.

Qualifications

• Experience or willingness to learn Makaton.
• Comfort with supporting a child who uses a tube feeding approach.
• Experience caring for children with additional needs is welcome.

Responsibilities

• Take the child to parks and community activities.
• Assist with walks, outings, and visits to local places.
• Support with personal care and pad changes as needed.
• Help with tube feeding following the care plan and training.
• Provide close supervision and keep him safe when out and about.
• Encourage independence and new experiences.
• Use Makaton and other methods to facilitate communication.

Job description

Hours: 5 hours per week during term time, with extra hours available during school holidays.

Term time: 5 hours per week

• Wednesday: 2.5 hours
• Thursday: 2.5 hours

School holidays: approximately 7-14 additional hours per week

There may also be opportunities for some extra hours by agreement.

Rate: £13.41 per hour

We’re looking for a kind, fun, patient and reliable Personal Assistant to spend time with our lovely 7-year-old son, helping him enjoy his favourite activities, explore the community and have plenty of fun along the way!

He is a happy little boy with lots of personality. He is pre-verbal and tube fed and communicates using Makaton, so we’re looking for someone who is happy to take the time to get to know him, understand his way of communicating and help him feel included in everything going on around him.

This isn’t just about providing support - it’s about becoming someone he looks forward to seeing!

What might you get up to?

No two days need to be exactly the same. You could be:

• Heading to the park for some fresh air and fun
• Going for walks and little adventures
• Exploring local activities and places to visit
• Popping to the shops or getting out into the wider community
• Helping him try new experiences and build confidence
• Using Makaton and other ways of communicating to make sure he has choices and knows what’s happening
• Most importantly, having fun, sharing laughs and getting to know him as an individual

There are also some important caring responsibilities as part of the role, including:

• Supporting with personal care and pad changes
• Supporting him safely with his tube feeding, following his established care plan and training
• Providing close supervision and keeping him safe when out and about
• Encouraging his independence wherever possible

Who are we looking for?

Someone who is:

Friendly, patient, dependable, caring and up for a bit of adventure!

You’ll need to be comfortable supporting with personal care and happy to spend time both at home and out in the community.

Experience of Makaton, tube feeding or supporting children with additional needs would be fantastic, but it isn’t essential. Training can be provided for the right person - personality, patience and a genuine desire to get to know him are just as important.
