Job summary

Disability North in Kenton, Newcastle upon Tyne, is seeking a diligent Personal Assistant to support Haydyn, a seven-year-old with autism and sensory needs. The role requires a full driving licence and own vehicle, with shifts around school holidays and activities.

You will help Haydyn stay calm, engaged and safe during outings, outings and daily routines, building a trusting relationship while providing patient, kind support. Applicants must have permission to work in the U.K.

School holidays: 16.5 hours to be used flexibly

Rate of pay: £15.20 per hour

Haydyn is my lovely 7-year-old little boy who has autism, significant learning and communication needs in line with an intellectual disability, and severe sensory processing difficulties.

Haydyn is a happy and affectionate little boy with lots of energy. When he is settled and regulated, he is an absolute pleasure to be around. However, when he becomes overwhelmed or dysregulated, things can become very challenging for him, and he requires a calm, patient and understanding adult who can support him through these difficult moments.

Haydyn loves to play with his toy kitchen and enjoys lots of fun, active activities. His absolute favourite thing to do is swimming, but he also loves trampolining, soft play and days out at the farm.

Due to Haydyn’s sensory processing difficulties, he can experience frequent emotional dysregulation. His Personal Assistant will need to recognise when he is becoming overwhelmed, remain calm and reassuring, and help him to regulate and feel safe.

Haydyn has very little awareness of danger and can run off unexpectedly. When out and about, he always needs close supervision and must hold an adult’s hand, when required to keep him safe. His PA will need to be alert, confident and able to respond quickly if Hayden tries to run off.

I am looking for someone who is kind, patient, energetic and reliable, with a good understanding of autism, learning disabilities and sensory needs. You will need to be confident supporting Haydyn when he is dysregulated, as well as helping him safely enjoy the activities and days out that he loves.

As many of Haydyn’s favourite activities require travelling, it is essential that you have a full driving licence and access to your own vehicle.

Most importantly, I am looking for someone who will take the time to get to know Haydyn, understand his individual needs and build a trusting and positive relationship with him.
