Job description

This is an exciting and unique opportunity for a trainee with an interest in perioperative care to develop as a clinician. The post is designed to provide a wide range of perioperative experience for a trainee, including running a pre-operative assessment clinic and working with a range of specialities to continue to develop perioperative services within the Trust. There will also be the opportunity to attend appropriate regional and national events. It is anticipated that during this twelve month post the trainee will be able to amass the perioperative skills and competencies necessary for their specialist training.

The post will be split 60:40 between clinical and perioperative/CT3 activities. Clinical duties will be split between Anaesthesia and Critical Care with an anticipated:

  • six months in general/obstetric anaesthesia (obstetric anaesthesia on-calls) and six months in critical care.

The post can either be taken as a stand-alone role or as an Out of Programme Experience (OOPE) from a specialist training programme. For the latter, prior agreement must be sought with the relevant Specialty Training Committee (STC) and the deanery. The post is tailored to meet CT3 eligibility criteria.

The post is for one year at Homerton Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust. We would welcome applications from doctors who have previous experience in any of a wide range of specialties, though relevant experience in critical care/anaesthesia is required in order to function independently as a registrar out of hours.

The role of the fellow will be to support the current perioperative pathways and develop new services and operating procedures. This will include running a pre-assessment clinic, working with staff in pre-assessment to help them develop their skills as well as providing anaesthesia on relevant theatre lists eg colorectal surgery. The departments also employ fellows in bariatrics, obstetrics and education and it is anticipated that there will be a degree of overlap between some of the work being done in order to further integrate services. Whilst on ITU there will be an opportunity to work with the multi-disciplinary team to deliver enhanced recovery to appropriate groups of patients as well as developing pre-operative optimisation pathways.

The Homerton Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust sits in the middle of one of the most diverse locations in the world. To this end we are committed to and champion equality and diversity in all aspects of our employment practice and service delivery. All employees are expected to understand and respect this commitment and work with us to promote equality and diversity in the course of their work.
