About the team:

We are seeking a dedicated Perinatal Mental Health Nurse to join our Community Perinatal Teams across Croydon, Lambeth, Lewisham, and Southwark, due to expansion of our services. The ideal candidate will have experience in adult inpatient, Mother and Baby inpatient units, community mental health services, or CAMHS, and be experienced working with women suffering from moderate to severe mental illness during the perinatal period.

You should be familiar with Perinatal community standards, governance, and performance structures, and be confident in collaborating with agencies such as Children and Family Social Services, Midwifery and Obstetric teams, CMHTs, Health Visitors, and the Voluntary sector.

Excellent clinical knowledge and skilled practice in women with mental health disorders in the perinatal period are essential. You should have experience working in diverse inner-city boroughs and understand the opportunities and challenges this environment presents.

Main duties of the job

About the role:

You will work closely with colleagues in PMHTs, receive support, and participate in ongoing Perinatal workforce training within SLaM and London-wide. You will also be part of the Pan London Community Perinatal Nurses network, with opportunities to supervise junior staff and students, and implement best practices following NICE guidelines.

The Lewisham Perinatal Service provides a Monday to Friday, 9-5 service to residents of Lewisham, offering assessment, intervention, and treatment for women with moderate to severe mental health disorders in the perinatal period.

You will be based at the Lewisham Perinatal Team, Old Town Hall, Catford, SE6 4RU. Our headquarters is at Denmark Hill, close to the train station. We serve multiple locations including Croydon, Lambeth, Lewisham, Southwark, and substance misuse services across Bexley, Lambeth, Greenwich, and Wandsworth.

Person specification

Qualifications:

  • RMN with current NMC registration and revalidation.
  • Ongoing professional development evidence.

Experience:

  • Experience in inpatient or community mental health settings.
  • Experience working with patients with severe and enduring mental health issues.
  • Understanding of maternal mental illness.
  • Skills in risk assessment, risk management, and crisis management.
  • Use of evidence-based interventions for severe mental health problems.

Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of safeguarding policies, legislation including MHA, Children Act 1989, Carers Act.
  • Knowledge of interventions for perinatal mental health illnesses.
