Job summary

The Scottish Council of Independent Schools is seeking a performance hockey coach to support the Director of Hockey and lead sessions for pupils from P4 to S6. You will work with dedicated staff to deliver coaching and coach matches, primarily Monday to Friday with Saturday mornings, totaling 17 hours per week.

PVG membership is required for this role, and you will plan sessions with the hockey programme's playing principles.

Qualifications

  • Teamwork and collaboration with staff and pupils.
  • Awareness of health and safety in childcare settings.
  • Desire to develop as a hockey coach.
  • Previous hockey coaching experience in schools or junior clubs.
  • Ability to work on Saturday mornings.
  • Played hockey to a good standard.
  • First aid training is desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Organise and deliver high-quality coaching sessions to Junior and Senior School pupils.
  • Manage groups of children, ensure safety and uphold school standards.
  • Select and organise teams weekly for Saturday matches.
  • Take registers and flag behavioural or pastoral needs.
  • Plan sessions with the Director of Hockey based on playing principles.
  • Umpire and coach school hockey games.

Job description

We are looking for a performance hockey coach to support the Director of Hockey in all aspects of the hockey programme. The successful candidate will work alongside the dedicated hockey staff to deliver hockey sessions and coach matches from P4 up to S6.

The detail below lists the main responsibilities of this role:

The working days are Monday to Friday plus Saturday mornings with the 17 hours split as below:

  • Monday from 11:00 to 12:30 and then 16:00 to 17:15
  • Tuesday from 15:00 to 17:15
  • Wednesday from 11:00 to 17:15 (inclusive of 2 x 30 minute unpaid breaks)
  • Thursday from 15:00 to 17:15
  • Friday non-working day
  • Saturday from 8:00 to 12:30

This role is available upon confirmation of PVG membership until Thursday March 25th, 2027.

Main Responsibilities:
  • Organising and delivering high-quality coaching sessions to Junior School and Senior School aged pupils.
  • Managing groups of children, ensuring safety and ensuring the pupils uphold the expected standards of the school.
  • Selecting and organising teams each week for Saturday matches.
  • Taking registers of each session and flagging any behavioural issues or pastoral needs.
  • Working alongside the Director of Hockey to plan every session in line with the playing principles of the hockey programme.
  • Umpiring and coaching games.

While these are the key responsibilities of the role, this is not necessarily an exhaustive list and other duties may be required to ensure the smooth running of the hockey programme.
