Job summary

A regional law firm is seeking an HR Assistant for a maternity cover contract in Luton. The candidate will support the People & Talent team in various HR activities, including onboarding, handling employee queries, and managing personnel records. The ideal applicant has 2-5 years of HR experience and preferably a Level 5 CIPD qualification. The department

Our People & Talent team is looking for an Assistant to join their team for maternity cover. The role is full time and anticipated to be until end February 2026.

You will support the People & Talent Partner and work closely with the People & Talent Executive supporting our 165 people across three offices. The role is varied and requires the ability to ensure routine responsibilities are managed alongside delivering project based initiatives which ensure the Firm keeps its prominent position as an Employer of Choice for those seeking to work in a highly reputable forward-thinking regional law firm.

The Firm’s People & Talent Team is responsible for the development and implementation of people related initiatives, policies and procedures – putting our most valuable asset, our People, at the heart of what we do. The Team supports Partners in the people management of their departments including recruitment, retention, and performance management and in the delivery of learning and development opportunities.

About The Role And Responsibilities

Depending on experience and skill set, the successful candidate will support the People & Talent Partner in delivering specific projects and new initiatives based around HR fundamentals of Firm recruitment, policy and procedure review and development, talent attraction and retention, learning and development and enhanced efficiency around internal HR processes. However, the role may also include some of the following general 'hands-on' HR activities:

  • onboarding new joiners and managing leaver processes
  • in liaison with Partners, ensuring flexible working and family leave requests are handled in accordance with policy and legislation and to support our People
  • handling employee queries and maintaining cordial employee relations
  • maintaining up-to-date electronic personnel records for all of our people including contractual information, correspondence and maintaining our HR Database
  • involvement in organising learning and development/training
  • contributing to policy reviews and policy updates including initiating policy enhancements.

What You Will Need To Bring To The Role

  • Between 2 - 5 years’ experience in a relevant and related role, currently operating as an HR Advisor, Assistant or junior Executive. Over-qualified candidates will not be shortlisted
  • Professional services experience is highly desirable
  • Preferably minimum Level 5 – CIPD qualified
  • Experience of a HR database – experience of Cascade HR software will be a distinct advantage
  • A ‘can-do’ attitude and a natural sense of urgency

  • Demonstrates close attention to detail
  • Excellent organisation, time management and prioritisation skills – is able to effectively manage a number of HR duties and projects at once in a fast-paced working environment. Is adaptable when priorities change
  • Flexibility with a positive attitude to work and the ability to stay calm under pressure
  • Has excellent communication skills and a professional and courteous manner in personal interactions, telephone and in written communication
  • Demonstrates excellent IT skills including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and associated HR related packages/software
