Base pay range

If, like us, you want to foster landscapes with more nature, landscapes that are accessible to more people and help to address the climate crisis, then we’d love you to join us as Peatland Restoration Officer and help us achieve this vision.

We’re looking for an innovative and enthusiastic Peatland Practitioner with an experience of planning and overseeing the delivery of peatland restoration works at scale whilst working in partnership with a range of groups.

As Peatland Restoration Officer, you’ll use your knowledge of Peatland Restoration techniques to plan and oversee the delivery of a 3 year programme of restoration works across the Abergwesyn group of Commons. Managing contractors to utilise techniques such has hagg reprofiling and dam building to cover exposed peat, you will reverse the decline of our peatland habitat, restoring the land and playing a vital role in mitigating the effects of climate change.

Working with colleagues, external partners and collaborators, as well as the local community, you'll be an advocate for Peatland management, promoting the importance of conserving and restoring our precious upland habitats.

Currently, there are many opportunities for change in how our peatland restoration programme is managed across South Wales, and you will be key to directing how the National Trust moves towards achieving higher standards of land management for nature and climate.

Internally, your job title will be Assistant Nature Conservation Adviser.

What it's like to work here

This post will be part of the National Trust Cymru Consultancy Team - an inhouse team of multidisciplinary experts who together form a great repository of skills, talents and experience. It’s about being part of something different, where values matter and where our decisions are based on looking after our places for everyone, forever.

Based in our office in the heart of the Brecon Beacons, you will join a dedicated and skilled countryside team comprised of Rangers and Project Officers, who are committed to working with local communities to implement real change across the land we care for.

What you'll be doing

You’ll lead, support and assist our property team in delivering peatland and wider nature restoration at one of our key Nature accelerator portfolios, representing National Trust Cymru both internally and externally. You’ll deliver programmes of work alongside staff and volunteers, reporting both within our project management framework and externally, sharing our findings with others embarking on similar works.

You’ll deliver the following elements of the project:

• Habitat Restoration - e.g. prepare detailed peat restoration plans and manage contractor agreements to improve habitats and natural flood control.

• Ensure that planned work is in line with the NT's Peatland and Climate Programmes (e.g., regarding the use of Peatland Code Protocols).

• Collaborating closely with relevant partner organizations to coordinate work

• Oversee the creation of tenders, appointment and supervision of contractors on-site, undertaking practical peatland restoration works.

• Establish and deliver an agreed monitoring strategy

• Ensure that appropriate habitat management strategies are in place after the restoration work

Who we're looking for

We’d love to hear from you if you’re:

  • experienced in ecology and conservation land management
  • knowledgeable about wildlife legislation (protected species and sites), policy and grant schemes
  • skilled in biological field surveys, including plant ID
  • experienced in using GIS and databases
  • an effective communicator, able to build good working relationships
  • good at listening, building trust and giving a high-quality service to colleagues
  • someone with an eye for detail, good organisational skills and able to work at pace and keep to time
  • a champion of inclusion, who helps support everyone to feel welcome.
