The Role

We are seeking an enthusiastic payroll professional with the ability to improve and implement systems to join our finance team as a skilled and detail-oriented Payroll Officer. In this role, you will ensure accurate and efficient payroll operations, managing the company’s payroll processes while ensuring timely and accurate payroll transactions in compliance with relevant regulations. You will work closely with HR, finance, and external bodies such as HMRC and pension providers

Our Head Office
Our Head Office is based on the docks in Preston and is home to around 20–30 staff members who support our children’s homes and schools across the country. Departments include HR (Recruitment, IT, Communication & Engagement, Health & Safety), Finance, Maintenance, and Referrals. The office is modern and spacious with free on-site parking and a 24/7 gym located directly across the road.

Key Responsibilities

  • Process monthly payroll accurately and efficiently
  • Collate and input payroll data, including timesheets.
  • Calculate and process amendments such as starters, leavers, and contract changes.
  • Manage pay elements, including maternity and sickness pay.
  • Administer salary sacrifice schemes (Electric Vehicle Scheme, Bike to Work Scheme).
  • Ensure payroll database integrity through regular checks.
  • Generate monthly reports for pension providers.
  • Address payroll-related queries from employees and management.
  • Reconcile payroll transactions to the nominal ledger.
  • Maintain up-to-date payroll procedure guidance.
  • Support HR with relevant administrative tasks.

About You

  • A recognised payroll or accountancy qualification OR equivalent professional experience.
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in payroll processing.
  • Strong knowledge of payroll systems, taxation, national insurance, and pensions.
  • High numeracy skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent time management and organisational skills.
  • Strong IT skills, including Word, Excel, and databases.
  • Ability to handle sensitive matters professionally and confidentially
