BAM UK&I are looking for an experienced payroll manager to lead the payroll function.

This is a fantastic opportunity to join our fantastic people services team on at initial 18 month FTC.

Your mission

In this pivotal role, you will be responsible for overseeing the end-to-end payroll process, ensuring full compliance with UK payroll legislation and internal governance standards. You will manage and develop a small payroll team, work with existing manual processes, and identify opportunities to streamline or automate where feasible.

The successful candidate will be confident handling complex and escalated issues, working cross-functionally with HR, Finance, and other departments to ensure a smooth and efficient payroll operation.

Experience with payroll systems such as ePayfact and iTrent is desirable, though not essential.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead the delivery of accurate and timely payroll for BAM UK employees, ensuring compliance with

legal and regulatory requirements.

• Manage and support the payroll team, fostering a collaborative, accountable, and high-performing environment.

• Work effectively within existing manual processes, while continuously looking for opportunities to improve and streamline where appropriate.

• Act as the escalation point for complex or sensitive payroll queries, ensuring effective resolution with minimal business impact.

• Ensure all employee records are accurately maintained and updated, including new starters, leavers, and contractual changes.

• Liaise closely with HR, Finance, and external partners to ensure integration of payroll activities with wider business operations.

• Process statutory requirements such as tax, NIC, pensions, RTI submissions, and P11Ds.

• Prepare and deliver accurate payroll reports for internal stakeholders and support external audits as required.

Who are we looking for?

  • Significant experience in a payroll leadership role, with proven team management skills.
  • Excellent understanding of UK payroll legislation, statutory payments, and compliance requirements.
  • Comfortable working with a mix of automated and manual payroll processes.
  • Experience with payroll systems (e.g., ePayfact and iTrent) is advantageous but not essential.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, particularly in resolving complex payroll issues.
  • Exceptional attention to detail, accuracy, and ability to work under pressure.
  • Confident communicator with the ability to engage effectively across multiple departments.
  • Highly organised with strong prioritisation skills and a commitment to continuous improvement.
  • Willingness and ability to travel frequently to the Camberley office.
