Job description

  • Annual Salary: circa £45,000 dependent on experience

We are seeking an experienced Payroll Manager to join a highly respected accountancy practice. This role is ideal for someone who is proficient in managing comprehensive payroll processes and maintaining excellent client relationships.

Day-to-day of the role:

  1. Process client payrolls and BACS payments efficiently.
  2. Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, liaising on payroll, employment, and other matters, and resolving queries promptly.
  3. Ensure thorough knowledge and understanding of payroll matters, including current legislation.
  4. Conduct compliance checks regularly.
  5. Manage payroll elements such as starters, leavers, holiday pay, pension deductions, and statutory payments (SMP, SPP, SAP, SSP).
  6. Issue P45’s, P60’s, and other necessary documents.
  7. Liaise with HMRC both in writing and over the phone.
  8. Calculate tax and NIC contributions accurately.
  9. Handle auto enrolment, maintain pension scheme records, schedules, and payments.
  10. Carry out RTI submissions and CIS returns.
  11. Manage the setup and closure of PAYE schemes.
  12. Maintain accurate and concise records of systems.
  13. Record time accurately on timesheets.
  14. Supervise and train payroll administrators, ensuring quality control and development.

Required Skills & Qualifications:

  1. Proven experience of end-to-end payroll processing within an accountancy practice.
  2. Comprehensive understanding of tax and payroll laws.
  3. Proficiency in Sage Payroll; Xero Payroll.
  4. CIPP qualification is desirable but not essential.
  5. Strong mathematical and IT skills, including intermediate proficiency in Excel, Word, and Outlook.
  6. A-Level education or equivalent.
  7. Excellent attention to detail with high levels of accuracy for data entry.
  8. Flexible and adaptable attitude, capable of handling multiple deadlines.
  9. Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  10. Diligent, methodical, and with a hands-on approach to tasks.
  11. Excellent communication skills and leadership capabilities.
