Job description

We're looking for an experienced payroll professional to take ownership of our payroll and play a key part in our finance team.

At Amegreen, we provide specialist care and education for children and young people across our homes and schools. Our finance team supports the people delivering that work every day, making sure colleagues are paid accurately, queries are resolved and our financial records are well managed.

If you enjoy taking responsibility, investigating discrepancies and finding ways to improve how things work, we'd like to hear from you.

The role

Reporting to our Finance Manager, you'll manage four-weekly payroll for approximately 200 employees and monthly payroll for around 60 employees, alongside providing payroll support to associated organisations.

You’ll work closely with Finance, HR and Operations, becoming a trusted point of contact for payroll queries. Alongside payroll, you’ll support accounts processes, financial reporting and month-end activities, giving you variety and involvement across the wider finance function.

What we offer
  • Health Shield cash plan to help with everyday healthcare costs, available after probation and subject to eligibility.
  • Life insurance worth four times your basic annual salary.
  • Company pension with enhanced employer contributions.
  • Free holiday accommodation at our company holiday home on the south coast, subject to availability.
  • Employee Assistance Programme offering free, confidential support 24/7.
  • Electric car and Cycle to Work schemes through salary sacrifice.
  • Employee discounts, including Blue Light Card and local partner offers.
  • Company sick pay available after six months' service.
  • Training and development opportunities, alongside employee recognition and long-service awards.
What you’ll be doing
  • Managing payroll from start to finish, ensuring payments are accurate and deadlines are met.
  • Overseeing timesheets, checking submissions and resolving discrepancies with colleagues and managers.
  • Processing starters, leavers, salary changes, overtime, expenses, deductions and statutory payments.
  • Managing payroll-related benefits, salary sacrifice arrangements and pension requirements.
  • Keeping payroll compliant with HMRC requirements, including RTI submissions and year-end reporting.
  • Preparing payroll journals, reconciling control accounts and producing payroll cost and management reports.
  • Supporting purchase and sales ledger activities, preparing payment files and assisting with month-end and year-end accounts.
  • Helping with audits, maintaining clear records and improving payroll processes and financial controls.
What we’re looking for

You'll have experience managing payroll from start to finish and a sound understanding of UK payroll requirements, including PAYE, National Insurance, statutory payments and pensions.

You’ll also bring:
  • Experience of payroll reconciliations, journals and related accounting processes.
  • Confidence using payroll systems and spreadsheets to check data and investigate differences.
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to organise your workload around fixed deadlines.
  • A helpful, clear approach to answering queries and working with colleagues across different teams.
  • Discretion when handling confidential employee and financial information.
  • The confidence to spot problems, suggest improvements and see them through.
