Job description
Overview

Make a difference where it matters most. At Moorfields Eye Hospital, we believe that looking after our staff is just as important as looking after our patients. We are seeking a skilled and motivated Payroll Liaison Officer to ensure payroll runs smoothly and accurately across the Trust, directly supporting the experience of our dedicated staff.

We are looking for an experienced payroll advisor who is used to working with complex pay queries and prides themselves on providing an excellent level of customer service. This is a part time role (22.5 hours) to support our existing payroll liaison officer. There is a degree of flexibility on when the hours can be worked within the week as long as there is consistent support for any incoming payroll queries.

Key responsibilities
  • Serve as the main point of contact between Moorfields and our external payroll provider (SBS), ensuring timely and accurate payments for staff.
  • Troubleshoot complex payroll issues and lead process improvements to enhance payroll accuracy and efficiency.
  • Work closely with HR, Finance, and operational teams, supporting system administration (ESR, HealthRoster), overpayment investigations, payroll analytics, and reporting.
  • Provide hands-on, practical payroll support to ensure staff are paid correctly and on time, every time.
What you will do
  • Collaborate with external/outsourced payroll providers and maintain strong working knowledge of payroll statutory requirements (PAYE, NI, SSP, SMP, Student loan repayments).
  • Apply expert knowledge of payroll procedures and processes; understand public sector and defined contribution pension schemes including auto-enrolment rules.
  • Communicate complex information clearly to diverse audiences, with tact and diplomacy, including handling sensitive or distressing circumstances.
Requirements
  • Essential: Educated to degree/postgraduate diploma or equivalent work experience.
  • Substantial experience working with an NHS payroll system and ESR; expert knowledge of payroll/HR systems, preferably in the NHS or an outsourced provider to the NHS.
  • Experience dealing with external/outsourced payroll providers.
  • Good working knowledge of payroll statutory requirements including PAYE, NI contributions, SMP, SSP, and Student loan repayments.
  • Strong IT skills, particularly ESR systems and advanced Excel (pivot tables, macros, conditional formatting).
  • Ability to analyse data, solve problems effectively, and communicate complex information clearly to diverse audiences.
  • Desirable: IPPM qualification or equivalent knowledge and experience.
