Job summary

Derbyshire Support and Facilities Services Ltd. in Chesterfield is seeking a motivated apprentice to join the payroll team. You will start with input, checking and processing payroll information while working toward a recognised payroll qualification.

Interviews are scheduled for 5-6 October 2026. The role offers full-time hours (37.5 per week) within the Finance department, supporting Chesterfield Royal Hospital and DSFS.

Qualifications

  • Good standard of general education.
  • Educated to GCSE level (or equivalent).
  • Mathematics & English (Grades A-C or 4-9).
  • Willingness to complete a recognised payroll apprenticeship programme and associated learning requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Take responsibility for your own payroll section, prioritising and organising work to meet deadlines.
  • Input, check and process payroll information to deliver a accurate service.
  • Respond to pay queries from staff and managers.
  • Provide advice and support on pay related matters to customers across the organisation.
  • Develop working relationships with internal departments and external agencies.
  • Take part in apprenticeship training and apply learning to the workplace.

Job overview

We are looking for a highly motivated, enthusiastic and organised individual to join our busy payroll and pensions team. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who is keen to start a career in payroll while gaining hands on experience and working towards a recognised payroll qualification. You will be part of a team within the Finance department that provides a payroll and pension service to Chesterfield Royal Hospital and Derbyshire Support and Facilities Services Ltd.
Both in-house and external training will be given for you to progress to take responsibility for your own payroll section.

Main duties of the job
  • Under the supervision of the Payroll/Senior Payroll Officers you will take responsibility of your own payroll section, prioritising and organising your workload to meet strict deadlines
  • Under the supervision of the Payroll/Senior Payroll Officers you will manage your own workload to help deliver an accurate and quality payroll service. This will include the input, checking and processing of payroll information
  • Under the supervision of the Payroll/Senior Payroll Officers you will respond to pay queries from staff and managers
  • Under the supervision of the Payroll/Senior Payroll Officers you will provide advice and support on pay related matters to our customers, including staff members and managers across the organisation
  • Develop and maintain working relationships with other internal departments and external agencies
  • Take part in apprenticeship training and apply your learning to the workplace

Qualifications and Training
  • Good standard of general education

Experience
  • An interest in payroll and finance
  • Ability to carry out basic administrative tasks accurately, including data entry and filing
  • Understanding of the importance of providing a helpful, professional and responsive service to all stakeholders
  • Previous relevant office experience
  • Experience of working in a busy environment
Skills and Knowledge
  • Basic IT skills including e-mails, Microsoft word and excel
  • Ability to prioritise
  • Ability to work under pressure to meet deadlines
  • Effective written and verbal skills
  • Ability to work as part of a team
  • Knowledge of other Microsoft Office tools
  • Knowledge of more complex excel functions
