Job description

A fantastic opportunity has become available working for a large leading Distribution Company in the North West. The company is looking for an experienced, tenacious Payroll Assistant to join their busy, lively, friendly team on a full-time basis.

As a Payroll Assistant, you will have a keen eye for detail, plan your own workload, and demonstrate flexibility. This is a busy, fast-paced role working to strict deadlines. You should work well within a team and have the confidence to make decisions. Computer literacy and confident Excel skills are essential, along with the ability to process a large payroll from start to finish.

The ideal Payroll Assistant will have at least 3 years of experience and must hold QBE or AAT qualifications.

Reporting to the Payroll Manager, your responsibilities will include:

  • Processing weekly and monthly payrolls from start to finish, including leavers and holiday pay
  • Managing contractor/sub-contractor payments
  • Calculating payroll and generating payslips
  • Checking payslips and running relevant reports
  • Handling P45s, P60s, P11Ds, tax implications, and government deductions
  • HMRC submissions and tax compliance
  • Completing payroll journals and monthly reconciliations
  • Providing cover for other payrolls as needed
  • Preparing depot staff cost budgets annually
  • Processing holiday forms and payroll amendments
  • Scanning and attaching documents into the payroll system
  • Assisting with pension processing for the group
  • Answering phone queries related to wages

The person suitable for this role will:

  • Possess payroll knowledge and proficiency in Word and Excel
  • Maintain confidentiality and exercise discretion at all times
  • Be able to prioritize workload and meet deadlines
  • Work effectively under pressure using own initiative
  • Be an excellent communicator with a good sense of humor—team fit is key!
