Job summary

University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust is seeking hospital porters to support clinical and non-clinical teams by transporting patients, equipment, medications, and test results across the trust. The role includes rotating shifts, bank/zero-hour contracts, and adherence to Trust policies for safety and confidentiality.

Porters will move patients by bed, wheelchair, or trolley, assist with transfers, and help maintain safe, clean equipment while reporting faults.

Qualifications

• Ability to assist moving patients by wheelchair or bed.
• Commitment to patient safety and confidentiality.
• Willingness to work flexible shifts including early/late/on-call.

Responsibilities

• Work safely, courteously, and confidentially in line with Trust policy and SOPs.
• Be in designated place of work from shift start to end and follow a planned schedule with flexibility.
• Assist patients into wheelchairs and beds, ensuring comfort for transport.
• Move patients around the hospital using wheelchairs, beds, or stretchers, possibly over distances.
• Ensure safety by keeping equipment clean and reporting faults.
• Deliver drugs and IV fluids to wards as per policy.
• Deliver and change medical gases to wards and adjust gas manifolds; training provided.
• Respond to tasks from Supervisor or Helpdesk via phone/pager.
