Main duties of the job
- To provide a comprehensive and high quality pharmaceutical service within the Dispensary team, including the dispensing, checking and handing out of Outpatient prescriptions and assisting the dispensary management team in the day to day running of both the outpatient and inpatient dispensaries.
- To work under the supervision of the dispensary management team to provide a safe and effective service, working within the scope of existing SOPs but also supporting in the reviewing and updating of SOPs when required.

Job responsibilities
- To maintain patient records using the Pharmacy computer systems to ensure information is accurate and up to date and complies with the Data Protection Act.
- To provide an accurate and efficient dispensing service of various types of prescriptions in accordance with departmental standard operating procedures.
- Active involvement of receiving and issuing prescriptions to customers including comprehensive medication counselling in accordance with departmental standard operating procedures.
- Prioritise work to deliver an efficient service, working in accordance to dispensary standards and KPIs.
- Management of the outpatient prescription archiving, including the destruction of records following national standards.
- Liaise with relevant ward Pharmacists and Ward staff to provide an effective and efficient service.
- Ensure the correct storage of medication and ensure that it remains in date.
- Process and return any surplus or unused drugs following departmental standard operating procedures.
- Ensure that pharmacy stock is both stored and rotated appropriately.
- Assist the dispensary management team in facilitating improvement huddles and ensure the team are working towards these improvements.
- Assist management with internal audits of controlled drugs within the pharmacy, including date and balance checks.
- Ensure controlled drugs are destroyed in a timely and appropriate manner when necessary.
- Assist senior staff in the monitoring of standards according to agreed timescale and ensure that appropriate data collection forms are completed accurately.
- Assist senior staff with maintaining and updating relevant SOPs.
- Assist with audit work undertaken and help implement any changes in practice.
- After accreditation, participate in the departmental ACT rota, as well as the routine checking and issuing of outpatient and inpatient items.
- Ensure all general dispensary based tasks are completed as per the dispensary rota.
Person Specification
Qualifications
- BTEC in Pharmaceutical science or equivalent.
- NVQ 3 in pharmacy services or equivalent.
- Registration with the General Pharmaceutical Council.
Knowledge
- Knowledge of pharmaceutical technical procedures acquired through training, NVQ3, BTEC in pharmaceutical science or equivalent level.
- Knowledge of COSHH.
Experience
- Understanding of hospital pharmacy environment.
- Understanding of working effectively within multidisciplinary groups.
Skills
- Evidence of excellent communication skills (verbal and written) with healthcare professionals and patients.
- IT literacy including core Office programs.
- Methodical and able to prioritise workload.
- Good time management.
- Ability to analyse information to provide advice.
- Good team worker and works effectively within multidisciplinary team.
