Patient Administrator and Booking Clerk - Maternity Cover

Department: Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC)

Band 3 £24,937 - £26,598 per annum, pro rata if part-time

Hours: 37.5 per week - A mix of 8am-4pm & 1pm-9pm weekdays, as well as 9am-7pm on weekends- on a rolling rota

All MKUH roles will be considered for flexible working.

This is a busy and fast-paced environment. The successful candidate will be enthusiastic, organised, approachable and patient-focused, and able to work well under pressure as the first point of contact for patients, relatives and visitors.

Be able to admit, transfer, discharge patients using the electronic patient record.

Responsibilities
  • Greet all visitors to the unit in a friendly, helpful and courteous manner.
  • Obtain and register confidential information from all patients attending SDEC, including updating patient details and using a smart card to access summary care records for NHS numbers.
  • Be the first point of contact for patients/relatives attending SDEC; manage difficult or distressing situations and alert nursing or clinical staff as needed.
  • Provide general administrative support for SDEC; organise paperwork and notes to ensure an efficient, high-quality service.
  • Handle general enquiries via telephone and in person, directing patients, relatives and external agencies as appropriate; maintain a welcoming, professional and considerate approach.
  • Work flexibly, prioritise own workload, and operate independently under pressure, including weekend shifts.
Requirements/Qualifications
  • Experience in hospital administration or similar front-line support roles preferred.
  • Ability to work with nurses, medical staff and management teams; strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Capable of working with electronic patient records, admitting, transferring and discharging patients.
  • Ability to handle highly distressing or emotional situations with patients and relatives.
  • Flexible approach to shift patterns and weekend work; ability to work independently and manage workload without direct day-to-day supervision.
  • Broad knowledge of hospital processes and external agencies.
