Job summary

Greenacre School, one of the UK’s largest special schools, is seeking a Pastoral Welfare Leader to support pupils aged 3 to 19 with severe and complex learning needs. The role involves working across the school and community to prevent issues, intervene early and improve welfare and attendance, including liaising with safeguarding services.

The candidate should have pastoral or safeguarding leadership experience, excellent communication skills, and robust safeguarding knowledge.

Qualifications

• Must have proven experience in pastoral, welfare or safeguarding leadership within SEND/SEMH settings.
• Excellent communication skills with students, staff and families, including challenging contexts.
• Strong knowledge of safeguarding legislation and best practice.
• Resilience, calmness and empathy in stressful situations while maintaining professionalism.

Responsibilities

• Respond to pupil and family needs across the school and community.
• Lead preventative and early intervention strategies to improve behaviour, welfare and attendance.
• Line-manage and support other staff; implement Team Teach and other de-escalation strategies.

THE ROLE

Pastoral Welfare Leaders work flexibly across our school and community in response to the needs of pupils and their families. When pupils are regulated, they develop and deliver preventative and early intervention strategies to improve behaviour, welfare and attendance. This includes working with and making appropriate referrals to specialist services and agencies. At tricky times, they are proactive in supporting pupils to regulate their behaviour through the effective use of Team Teach and other strategies. Pastoral Welfare Leaders line-manage, motivate and support other members of staff. If you are new to leadership you will access personalised leadership development.

THE CANDIDATE

• Has proven experience in a pastoral, welfare, or safeguarding leadership role, ideally within a SEND, SEMH or alternative provision setting.
• Possesses a deep understanding of the challenges faced by young people with SEN needs and effective strategies to support them.
• Is an excellent communicator with the ability to build strong, positive relationships with students, staff, and families, often in challenging circumstances.
• Has a robust knowledge of current safeguarding legislation and best practice
• Is resilient, calm, and empathetic, with the ability to manage stressful situations and maintain professional boundaries.
• MUST be educated with GCSE Math’s and English
• NVQ L3 qualification or working towards
• Car driver with access to vehicle

SALARY/ HOURS

Starting salary for a Pastoral Welfare Leader is £27,368 actual annual salary (FTE = £31,537 - £34,434) working 37 hours per week Mon-Fri term time only + 5 inset days + amazing benefits working for our Wellspring trust.
