Job description

Overview

Position Summary:

Nusano seeks a Particle Accelerator Technologist to assist with the installation, operation, and maintenance of a first-generation, state-of-the-art, high-power accelerator to produce radioisotopes for medical applications. Working with scientists, engineers, and technicians, the Particle Accelerator Technologist will execute work related to high vacuum, electromagnet, RF, process cooling, electronics, controls, mechanical, and cryogenic systems. This role will provide equipment and end-to-end system support for the accelerator. You will be involved in various experiments throughout the project including final beam commissioning, participating in the lifecycle management of the system, identifying equipment, and overall process improvements.

Responsibilities

What You'll Do:

  • Assemble, qualify, and operate accelerator and related subsystems and components.
  • Diagnose equipment malfunctions and perform advanced troubleshooting to identify and replace defective components using detailed drawings, manuals, and verbal and/or written instructions.
  • Develop and maintain testing tools and processes to streamline troubleshooting and repair activities with the goal of increasing safety and reducing downtime.
  • Identify areas for improvement and work with R&D engineers to develop improvements for existing and future components, systems, and processes.
  • Participate in a rotating on-call schedule with team members and be available to work after hours on occasion.
  • Work safely around radiological, chemical, mechanical, electrical, and cryogenic hazards and using appropriate personal protective equipment.
  • Work with electronic test equipment and tools (handheld and bench-top devices).
  • Possible work over holidays to ensure maintenance.
Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • Associate degree, Certificate of Technology, or Trade License in a related field with a minimum of 3 years of experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
  • Strong diagnostic skills and experience troubleshooting any of the following technologies: electrical, mechanical, vacuum, RF, electromagnet, cryogenic, controls, or high voltage systems.
  • Experience in developing, following, and redlining formal procedures as well as understanding technical drawings and schematics.
  • Able to work with a wide variety of hand and power tools.
  • Competent with digital productivity (Microsoft Office products).
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred Requirements:

  • Experience operating and upgrading particle accelerator systems.
  • Experience with electrical controls work (cable assembly, soldering, testing, etc.).
  • Comfortable with precision mechanical inspection tools (calipers, micrometer, height gauge, etc.).
  • Experience with high-voltage testing and high-power electronics.
  • Experience with RF systems and vacuum-electron devices (tubes, klystrons).
  • Experience with control system hardware and software components and best practices.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be comfortable working in a facility that produces radiation.
  • Work to be conducted in both an office environment and the production facility.
  • Must be able to sit for long periods of time.
  • Frequent use of computer with repetitive use of keyboard, mouse, and manual dexterity.
  • 2-8 weeks of travel per year for site visits, visiting vendors, and attending conferences.
