Description

We are currently seeking a part-time Technical Demonstrator in Science to assist in the provision and demonstration of specialist technical procedures and practical equipment, predominantly in biomedical science and biochemistry.

You will support scientific academic programs across the School Technical Services, including method development, one-to-one student support, maintenance of Health and Safety systems, and procedural documents. (Part-time 30 hours per week)

About the Role

You will provide technical support to academic staff and students during in-house, visiting, and off-campus teaching as required. You will support the application and demonstration of technical equipment and procedures in laboratories, specifically in biomedical science and biochemistry. You will assist academic staff in curriculum development and support workshops and learning sessions. Additionally, you will supervise students in research projects, which may include developing laboratory procedures.

Responsible for facilities, you will ensure Health & Safety compliance for all laboratory functions, including undertaking risk assessments, maintaining procedural documentation, and managing the correct storage and disposal of laboratory waste. You will collaborate with other technical demonstrators to propose upgrades, replacements, and expansions of equipment and software.

You will liaise with the authorized signatory to raise orders on the relevant budget, take delivery of goods, and verify all related data and records before payment authorization.

About You
  • A relevant Science Degree (Biomedical Science, Biochemistry) or equivalent
  • Significant practical experience in the relevant discipline in a commercial or educational setting
  • Teaching or demonstration experience in higher education or the ability to do so
  • Knowledge of health and safety procedures in the specialist area
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Strong problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work successfully as part of a team
  • Excellent organizational and administrative skills appropriate to the role
  • Flexible and reliable in responding to complex workloads and prioritizing conflicting demands
Additional Information

This is a part-time, 0.8 FTE role at 30 hours per week.

Salary: Starting from £27,147, rising to £30,141 per annum, (£33,482 to £37,174 FTE). The salary range reflects potential maximum pay progression and inflationary increases. The default is to appoint at the lower end unless there are exceptional circumstances.

Interview date: 23rd May

Some evening and weekend work may be required. Working hours will be arranged in advance with the line manager.
