Job description

The Adjunct Instructor will be responsible for teaching assigned courses within the Health Information Management program, specifically focusing on Medical Terminology or Electronic Health Records (EHRs).

Essential Duties

  • Delivering engaging and informative instruction to students, utilizing a variety of online teaching methodologies (e.g., live virtual lectures, pre-recorded videos, online discussions, interactive exercises, virtual office hours).
  • Developing and maintaining course syllabi, lesson plans, assignments, and assessments that align with program objectives and curriculum standards. These should be optimized for online delivery.
  • Grading student work (assignments, quizzes, exams) promptly and providing constructive feedback to promote student learning, utilizing online grading tools and platforms.
  • Maintaining accurate student records, including attendance and grades, within the Learning Management System (LMS).
  • Holding virtual office hours to provide student support and guidance via video conferencing, chat, or email.
  • Collaborating with other faculty members and the HIM Program Director to ensure curriculum consistency and effectiveness, often through online communication channels.
  • Staying current with industry trends and advancements in medical terminology, EHR systems, and HIM practices, including online resources and platforms.
  • Participating in program assessment and improvement activities, potentially through online meetings and surveys.
  • Adhering to all NWACC policies and procedures, including those related to online instruction and accessibility.
  • Utilizing the Learning Management System (LMS) and other designated online platforms for course management, communication, and content delivery.
  • Being readily available and responsive to student inquiries and needs via online communication channels.

Rate of Pay: $765 per credit hour

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge

  • Comprehensive understanding of medical terminology, including prefixes, suffixes, root words, and common medical abbreviations. OR
  • In-depth knowledge of electronic health record systems, including their functionality, implementation, and use in various healthcare settings.
  • Familiarity with HIPAA regulations and other relevant privacy and security standards, especially in the context of online data handling.
  • Knowledge of learning principles and effective online teaching methodologies.
  • Understanding of assessment and evaluation techniques in online environments.

Skills

  • Excellent communication (written and oral) and presentation skills, adapted for online delivery.
  • Ability to explain complex concepts clearly and concisely in various online formats.
  • Proficiency in using relevant software applications (e.g., EHR software, LMS, video conferencing platforms, Microsoft Office Suite).
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills, particularly for managing online courses and communication.
  • Ability to work effectively with students and foster a sense of community in an online environment.

Abilities

  • Ability to create a positive and supportive online learning environment.
  • Ability to motivate and engage students in online learning activities.

Required Qualifications

  • Experience: The faculty will possess expert skills, knowledge, experience, and education in the healthcare subject area and a history of successful teaching or related experience.
  • Bachelor's Degree in the teaching field with industry experience and industry-specific credential or license (if applicable to the teaching field).*

Preferred Qualifications

  • Credentialing in one of the following: Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA)
  • Master's degree in Health Information Management or a related field.
  • Prior experience teaching online courses at the college level.
  • Experience with online teaching platforms and Learning Management Systems (LMS).
