Overview
The Alternative HAN Company (Alt HAN Co) is a not-for-profit company jointly owned by Energy Suppliers. It operates through a Forum of supplier representatives, and a Board. Alt HAN Co was established in 2016 to address smart metering in hard-to-reach premises and to ensure a robust solution as the sector moves to a smarter, low-carbon energy system. Alt HAN Co has moved from Safe Launch into full Mass Roll Out.
The Role
As part of the core team in the Business Support department, you will co-lead, manage and maintain Alt HAN's compliance activities. You will report to the Director of Finance, Compliance and Business Support and regularly interact with the Alt HAN leadership team and the Board. You will co-lead on all Health & Safety activities, maintaining compliance with relevant industry standards across health and safety, risk management and corporate governance, and promoting a culture of adherence across the organisation. This role in a relatively small business requires you to manage a variety of responsibilities with accuracy and professionalism, and to identify when to seek additional expertise from internal resources or external consultants. You will have an overview of all regulatory areas and expand your knowledge over time.
Role Purpose
Reporting to the Director of Finance, Compliance & Business Support, key accountabilities include:
- Oversee external audits to ensure Alt HAN Co's certification continues to meet ISO45001 (Health & Safety).
- Manage and conduct assurance reviews at set intervals with stakeholders.
- Oversee all aspects of Health & Safety across the organisation, including 3rd party vendors, to ensure compliance with statutory obligations and to fulfil duties as Client under the Construction, Design and Management Regulations (CDM).
- Establish and maintain a compliance framework for the Crowded Meter Room Project, including:
- Ensuring Meter Equipment Managers fulfil responsibilities as Principal Contractor and Principal Designer.
- Enabling clear KPI reporting.
- Conducting regular risk assessments, audits and inspections to identify and mitigate hazards, including site visits across the country (frequency to be determined).
- Leading the company’s response to incidents and near-misses, performing root cause analyses and implementing corrective actions.
- Developing and enforcing CDM-related policies and procedures with fieldwork contractors to ensure safe and compliant work practices.
- Appointing duty holders as necessary and ensuring effective communication among all field operation parties.
- Manage health and safety training programs to ensure awareness of safety standards and best practices among employees and contractors.
- Act as the main point of contact for health and safety matters, providing guidance and support across the business.
- Own and create policies, procedures and processes to ensure traceability of compliance for Health & Safety.
- Oversee third-party suppliers in relation to Health and Safety and conduct due diligence reviews at onboarding and throughout the relationship.
- Manage reporting of Compliance KPIs and continual improvement initiatives.
- Collaborate with the Regulation team to understand the operational impacts of regulatory, legal and industry code changes.
- Chair the Health & Safety Assurance Board with external counterparts.
- Handle Health & Safety management for Alt HAN Co premises, employees and visitors.
- Deliver compliance changes impacting Alt HAN Co or third parties in relation to Health & Safety.
- Build and maintain relationships with key third-party Compliance contacts.
- Lead on incident and breach reporting related to Health & Safety events.
- Produce monthly reporting packs and attend governance meetings as a subject matter expert.
- Collaborate with the Compliance Manager (Infosec) to provide mutual support in fulfilling relevant duties as needed.

Qualifications / Certifications
Essential:
- NEBOSH General Certificate in Health & Safety
Desirable:
- Auditing background
- Knowledge of CDM Principles
- Energy, construction industry experience
- Data Protection Practitioner Certification
- ISO45001 Lead Auditor Qualification
