Job description

Fellows and Associates, Part Qualified Patent Attorney – I.T. & Engineering

This role sits within an IT & Engineering practice that works at the intersection of emerging technologies, early‑stage innovation and commercially ambitious scale‑ups. It’s an environment where the work is varied, the clients are engaged, and the opportunities to broaden your technical reach come thick and fast.

The team handles a wide spread of technologies — software, electronics, engineering, deep‑tech, medical devices, automotive systems, electric vehicles and more. Much of the work originates directly from UK innovators, including start‑ups and scale‑ups with strong growth potential. Because of this, the team values attorneys who are comfortable stepping outside the confines of their academic background and adapting to cases that don’t always map neatly onto a single discipline.

Alongside the technical work, the role has a clear outward‑facing element. The practice is active in the SEM and scale‑up space, meaning you’ll be encouraged to take part in events, meet founders, contribute to presentations and help build relationships. If you already enjoy business development, you’ll have room to lean into it; if you’re newer to it, the team is well‑placed to help you develop confidence and capability. An interest in AI and machine learning is increasingly valuable in this area, and would be a welcome addition.

Day to day, you’ll be involved in drafting, prosecution, strategic advisory work and contentious matters, gaining exposure to how different technologies evolve and how IP strategy shapes commercial decision‑making. You’ll work closely with senior colleagues who bring a wide range of technical experience, offering both support and the chance to take on responsibility as your judgement grows.

For a Part‑Qualified attorney, this is a role that offers genuine progression. You’ll develop your technical, legal and commercial skills in a team that values initiative, clear communication and a practical approach to client service. As you move towards qualification, you’ll have opportunities to deepen your involvement in portfolio strategy, oppositions, advisory work and client engagement.

The firm behind the role is a long‑established IP practice with a strong reputation for its work across high‑growth and technology‑rich sectors. Hybrid working, competitive remuneration and a supportive culture are part of the package, but the real appeal lies in the breadth of the work and the chance to build a career that spans multiple technology areas while developing a strong commercial profile.

  • Areas of Specialism: Artificial Intelligence, Electronics, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering
  • Experience Level: Part Qualified 1-3 Years, Part Qualified 4-5 Years
