Job summary

Spectrum Community Health CIC seeks a Paramedic (Band 6) at HMP YOI Deerbolt in Barnard Castle. This maternity cover fixed-term role (12 months) is full-time, 37.5 hours per week, offering a structured NHS healthcare environment within a prison setting.

The post requires registered practitioner status (RGN/RMN, GPHC or HCPC) with post-registration clinical experience, mentorship capability and skills in urgent care, triage and clinical governance. UK registration and NHS pension access apply.

Qualifications

• Registered Practitioner including Level 1 – RGN/RMN, GPHC or HCPC.
• Post registration experience working within a relevant clinical setting.
• Mentorship / teaching / assessing experience.
• Chronic disease management or long-term condition or willingness to undertake.

Responsibilities

• Assess, treat and care for prisoners to reduce conveyances and ED admissions.
• Work with the multidisciplinary team to deliver care within prison.
• Provide urgent clinical care in the Prison in response to patient need.
• Coordinate and realign staff resources to meet demand when needed.
• Demonstrate analysis and sound judgement in complex patient assessments.

Job overview

To respond to all medical emergencies as they arise within the prison. To support the delivery of an effective integrated healthcare service clinical model. To manage a small clinical caseload. To carry out effective triage of patients presenting with minor ailments. To provide paramedic interventions within scope of practice. To support the development, implementation and maintenance of the National Standards for Health Care in Prisons for the service.

Please note this role is a maternity cover.

Main duties of the job

Responsible for the assessment, treatment and care of prisoners to reduce inappropriate conveyances and subsequent emergency department admissions, where clinically safe to do so.

To provide care to prisoners within the establishment in collaboration with the wider Multidisciplinary team.

To provide urgent clinical care in the Prison in response to patient need.

Recognise that the local trust may have different protocols and policies for delivery of interventions and medicines from Ambulance and Primary Care providers, and to work within the scope of these protocols.

To respond appropriately to triage requests for assessments and care and to undertake triage.

In the absence of the Clinical lead, to take responsibility for the coordination and realignment of staff resources across the team to ensure capacity meets demand.

Demonstrates analytical and judgemental skills when interpreting and performing acute or complex patient assessments and care planning
