Background

The Serious Injury department is a multidisciplinary team which represents claimants and their families following life changing injuries such as traumatic head, brain, spinal cord injury, amputations and fatal injuries. The specialist team provides help and support with a heavy emphasis on rehabilitation.

Hugh James is a trusted legal partner of the Spinal Injuries Association (SIA), accredited by the Association of Personal Injury Lawyers (APIL), approved solicitors by Headway UK, Brake, RoadPeace, Horatio Garden, Child Brain Injury Trust, and The Limbless Association .

Our solicitors have been consistently ranked in the top tiers by the independent legal guides, Legal 500 and Chambers and Partners, asleaders in the field of personal injuryand specifically spinal cord andbrain injury litigation.

The role

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Paralegal to join the Serious Injury team in our Cardiff office. This is an exciting opportunity to join a new team, as part of the wider Serious Injury department. You will be responsible for:

  • Speaking with clients on the telephone;
  • Managing new enquiries via email and telephone;
  • Assisting solicitors within the group in all procedures, including obtaining medical records and preparing disclosure, instructing medico-legal experts and counsel, issuing and pursuing court proceedings;
  • Helping to manage a file load of litigated and non-litigated catastrophic personal injury cases;
  • Drafting various documents including witness statements on liability and quantum, instructions to Counsel, particulars of claim and schedules of loss;
  • Gathering evidence such as medical records and details of earnings losses to build up a case;
  • Producing correspondence including instructions to expert witnesses and procedural forms for court;
  • Arranging and attending multidisciplinary meetings, conferences with counsel and joint settlement meetings.

The role will involve communication with clients, experts and third parties via the telephone, email and in person. Excellent inter-personal skills are essential along with excellent client care skills to deal with sensitive issues involving emotional and vulnerable clients. You will also be expected to travel to meet clients and witnesses.

Skills & Qualifications

The successful candidate will be highly organised, responsible and a good team player.

This role will ideally suit an individual extensive administration experience in this area of law. Knowledge and understanding of the litigation process is essential.
