An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Paralegal Officer to join our supportive legal team at First North Law to provide support on a wide range of legal matters.

We welcome applications from a background in any legal discipline as full training will be provided as required to ensure the successful candidate can cover all areas of practice.

Day to Day

·Preparing and processing correspondence and documents

·Processing land registry searches, registration of leases and land charges.

·Ensuring an effective filing system is maintained and case management is up to date.

·Assistance with the preparation, collation, production and timely distribution of court bundles

·Written and telephone contact with clients, courts, suppliers and third parties in relation to case requirements.

·Making arrangements for a variety of meetings

·Drafting letters and court applications under supervision

·Carrying out legal research

·Occasional attendance at Court.

This is a role where work is varied, and challenges arise regularly as clients look to develop their own service offering.

The Person:

Whilst it is preferable for applicants to have some knowledge or experience working in a legal environment or equivalent professional setting, it is not essential to have a legal qualification, as this role is primarily supporting our team of lawyers.The ideal candidate will have experience with prioritising and meeting deadlines, a good standard of organisational and people skills, excellent attention to detail and have a flexible, ‘can do’ attitude.

Our Team

First North Law is wholly owned by North Yorkshire Council and the successful candidate for this role will be employed by the Authority and enjoy all the benefits of working for the Authority whilst undertaking work in the private sector. This role sits within a growing team and reports to a First North law Director.

First North Law generates revenue for the Council by offering traded legal services to external clients. The nature of the work requires a flexible and versatile approach as it will change from time to time in response to the changing needs of the Council, and its developing initiatives. The post is required to work with colleagues and Members at every level within the organisation, with external clients and partners, and to manage the performance of staff within its responsibility. The budget of Legal and Democratic Services is in part dependent on income from external sources and the post must play its part in ensuring successful income generation and in ensuring compliance with Law Society Professional Standards.

The postholder will be based at the North Yorkshire Council, County Hall, Northallerton. There is also scope to work remotely from home or from another Council building some of the time in line with our Corporate Hybrid Working Policy.
