Job description

The Role

The Paralegal will be part of the Canopius Group Legal team.

This is an ideal role for a legal graduate, ideally who has completed their Legal Practice Course or Solicitors Qualifying Examination.

It will be a unique opportunity to join a dynamic legal team that is expected to provide exemplary levels of service advising Canopius’ fast-paced and rapidly expanding international insurance business.

The role will involve direct interaction with business stakeholders as a first point of contact, liaising with capability experts within the department, and showcasing the department’s expertise to the business.

We are open to applications from individuals who are applying for or have been offered a training contract with a law firm.

Responsibilities will include:

  1. Assist in delivering legal support and guidance to all areas of Canopius on legal and regulatory issues.
  2. Support the drafting and/or legal review of contracts and other materials (including supplier contracts, non-disclosure agreements, and terms of business agreements with brokers). Develop and improve processes for these tasks.
  3. Serve as the first point of contact in the legal team for incoming legal queries through the legal mailbox and supplier contract system. Triaging and managing matter progress.
  4. Assist in onboarding brokers and managing the TOBA mailbox for this process.
  5. Provide ad hoc support for day-to-day legal tasks, resolving issues and escalating to senior colleagues as necessary.
  6. Update internal documents (e.g., policies, procedures, contact lists, logs) and files, and archive relevant information received from internal and external stakeholders.
  7. Provide administrative support to the legal team.

Skills and experience:

  • Educated to degree level; Legal Practice Course or Solicitors Qualifying Examination preferred but not essential.
  • Experience reviewing documents in line with a defined set of criteria.
  • Experience working in a legal environment (ideally in-house in a regulated firm).
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Organizational skills with the capability to apply common sense.
  • Ability to work to deadlines and complete tasks under pressure.
  • Willingness to undertake administrative/clerical tasks to gain insight into the bigger picture.
  • Attention to detail.
