Job summary

University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust in Derbyshire is seeking a motivated registered nurse to join the Specialist Palliative Care Service as a Development Nurse. This 18‑month rotational fixed term or secondment role offers structured development across Nightingale Macmillan Inpatient Unit, Ward 2 (EOLC ward), Hospital Palliative Care Team and Community Palliative Care Team.

Qualifications

• Registered nurse with NHS experience in palliative care.
• Interest in development and mentorship.
• Ability to work across multiple sites and multidisciplinary teams.

Responsibilities

• Assess, plan, implement and evaluate holistic, person-centred care for patients with specialist palliative and end-of-life care needs.
• Support patients, families and carers with expert advice, information and emotional support throughout care journey.
• Develop specialist knowledge in symptom management, communication and complex palliative care through education and mentorship.
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams across acute, community and hospice settings to ensure seamless, high-quality patient care.
• Act as a patient advocate, maintaining dignity, respect and compassionate care at all times.
• Provide guidance and education to colleagues, patients and carers to develop palliative care knowledge across services.
• Participate in nurse-led triage, care coordination and service development as knowledge grows.
• Contribute to audit, quality improvement, research and educational initiatives to enhance outcomes.
