Job description

The Royal Collection contains an unparalleled collection of nearly 8,000 paintings and 3,000 miniatures.

Our team of talented Paintings Conservators is responsible for all conservation activities relating to the paintings displayed within the Royal residences as well for loans from the Paintings collection.

Immersing yourself in this fascinating collection, you will assess, repair, and conserve a group of stored paintings, preparing them for photography and safe transport, using the most appropriate methods and materials.

Key Responsibilities

  • Examine and assess paintings currently held in storage, recording condition and identifying works requiring immediate conservation attention.
  • Undertake essential structural conservation or holding treatments in situ to facilitate safe handling, packing and transport.
  • Provide expert guidance to art handling teams on best practice for wrapping and transporting individual works.
  • Maintain clear and accurate conservation records using the central database.

Essential Criterea

  • A qualified conservator with a post-graduate degree in paintings conservation, you’ll have particular practical experience with structural conservation, looking to expand your skills in a hands-on environment.
  • Familiar with a wide range of materials and techniques, you’ll have an excellent understanding of the principles underpinning conservation best practice.
  • You’ll be confident approaching various conservation scenarios, able to problem solve and deliver high quality treatments while meeting project deadlines.
  • With excellent written and verbal communication skills, you’ll be able to provide clear documentation of your work and collaborate effectively with colleagues across different teams.
  • With an eye for detail and with strong organisational skills, you’re used to working independently and managing your own workload.
  • And with your excellent IT skills, including experience with collections management systems and MS Office, you’ll possess the ability to manage data, maintain records, and produce reports.
