Job description

We have a fantastic opportunity for a permanent Painter/Decorator to join our Ministry of Justice (MoJ) account in HMP Haverigg, Haverigg, Millom, Cumbria, LA18 4NA. This role is based on-site. You will need your own transport due to the remote location of this site, which is over an hour from Lancaster.

There will be a need to work 1 in 3 weekends but this would be on a rota basis (and with an additional allowance of 15% of basic salary).

At Amey, we’re supporting our justice client, His Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service (HMPPS) by providing them with safe, clean and efficient prisons. By using our facilities management expertise, we help keep 60 secure premises across England and Wales running smoothly.

The Painter/Decorator plays an important part in ensuring the planned and reactive maintenance work within the prisons is carried out in a safe, compliant and timely manner.

The standard hours of work are 39 hours per week (across 7 days where a weekend shift pattern is in place).

Work-life balance and flexibility are key for our success. We empower our people to make choices that are right for them. And with a network of offices across the UK, we’re open to discussing working options that suit you.

You will be responsible for:

  • Planned and reactive paint work in all areas of the prison.
  • Responsibility for the care and maintenance of tools, materials and additional company property.
  • Compliance with relevant company Health & Safety Policy, instructions and directive.
  • This role will also support both local and business zero carbon programmes, working towards zero carbon in a strategic and lean manner as and where it is appropriate.
  • Responsible for ensuring H&S standards are achieved across the contract.

What makes this role unique is you will ensure all works are carried out to the highest safety standards, sometimes working alongside and supervising the work of prisoners. Prison Security Clearance will be required (Amey will support you through this process).

We want to hear from you if you have:

  • Must be a fully qualified Painter.
  • Previous relevant work related experience.
  • Good awareness and understanding of personal health and safety, method statements and risk assessments.
  • Comfortable working alongside prisoners.
  • Ideally you will be qualified to NVQ level 3 in Painting and Decorating; however, we will consider applications if you have NVQ level 2.

In addition to this, it would be desirable if you are comfortable working alongside prisoners and experience in sharing best practice with others to help you hit the ground running, although this is not essential as we will provide you with the required development you need to bring you up to speed.

What we offer you

  • Career Development - Exceptional development and progression plan.
  • Pension – Generous Pension scheme which we will contribute to.
  • Choices - Our flexible benefits scheme is tailored by you, including buying additional annual leave, cycle2work scheme, charity giving and gym membership.
  • Save with Amey - Our online voucher portal gives you access to thousands of discounts from leading retailers to help you save on shopping, days out, or nights in. It includes healthcare, free GP service, dental vouchers.
  • Social Value - You’ll get 2 Community Involvement Days each year to volunteer for a charity of your choice and further opportunities to support fundraising initiatives.
  • On site - free parking, cafe, use of gym just outside prison for reduced fee.

We embrace difference and support individuals to work in ways that work best for them.

We are committed to working sustainably and by working in partnership with the communities we serve, so people and the planet are protected.
