We are seeking 4 skilled and experienced Painter/Decorators to join our Estates Department, contributing to the upkeep and improvement of our diverse range of buildings and facilities across campus. You will work with the Maintenance Supervisors/Managers to conduct condition surveys and maintain a schedule of works for painting and decorating.

Job Description
Job Purpose

A Painter and Decorator within the University Estates Maintenance Team is responsible for delivering high-quality planned and reactive painting, decorating, and finishing services across the university’s academic and support buildings, including listed properties and buildings in conservation zones. The role ensures the visual and structural integrity of the university’s assets by maintaining internal and external surfaces to the highest standards while preserving the character of historic structures. The position involves working collaboratively with other trades and stakeholders to support the university’s operational needs and provide a top-class user experience for staff, students, and visitors.

Duties and Responsibilities
Main Duties
  • Carry out all assigned tasks in a safe manner. Comply with all relevant health and safety legislation and procedures, including task-specific risk assessments and method statements, in the carrying out reactive and planned maintenance, reporting any potentially unsafe conditions
  • Prepare surfaces (walls, ceilings, woodwork, etc.) for painting by cleaning, sanding, scraping, or patching as necessary
  • Perform high-quality painting tasks using brushes, rollers, or sprayers, using various techniques and materials both internally and externally
  • Work with the Maintenance Supervisors/Managers to conduct condition surveys and maintain a schedule of works for painting and decorating tasks
  • Responsible for undertaking planned preventative maintenance and reactive work, working closely with other tradespeople and contractors to ensure efficient repairs completion
  • Work generally unsupervised to undertake the majority of tasks and repair work using own judgement; assist other staff within the department on reactive and planned maintenance
  • Ensure all necessary paperwork required, manually or electronically, is completed accurately and in a timely manner in line with SLAs and maintain records of completed work
  • Attend development and training courses to stay up to date with industry best practice and statutory regulations
  • Ensure works are completed safely, cost effectively, and to the agreed KPI’s and Service Level Agreement
  • Establish working relationships with key contacts to help improve service levels, developing communication links with Building Managers, Schools/Departments and professional services staff
  • Maintain personal tools, equipment, and vehicles, and complete regular checks to ensure they are in good condition
  • Carry out duties commensurate with the level of the post and uphold confidentiality and University policies on Health and Safety and Equality and Diversity
Qualifications
Essential Criteria
  • NVQ Level 2 or City & Guilds equivalent qualification in Painting & Decorating
  • Experience in a planned and reactive maintenance environment
  • Experience in decorating works in professional/commercial environments
  • Good understanding of general Health and Safety, risk assessments, and method statements
  • Ability to work well in a team and independently, with good task prioritisation
  • Familiarity with basic computer packages (Outlook, Word, Excel)
  • Good interpersonal skills and ability to communicate with customers and other departments
  • A valid driving licence is necessary to utilise the university fleet
Desirable Criteria
  • Fluency in Welsh (written and oral)
  • Experience in a higher education environment
  • Experience using apps to receive, update and complete assigned work
  • PASMA or IPAF training
  • Ability to carry out small ad-hoc carpentry and/or plaster repairs
  • Knowledge of conservation or heritage materials and techniques
Additional Information
  • This is a full-time open-ended position of 35 hours per week. Normal hours are 08:00–16:00, with one hour for lunch
  • Overtime is a condition of employment and will be worked as reasonably required; no regular level of overtime is guaranteed
  • To undertake any other duties as may be required commensurate with the grade of the post
  • To be available to attend annual Health Surveillance assessments
