Overview

Job summary: An experienced nurse practitioner is sought for the Children's Emergency Department at the Royal Alexandra Childrens Hospital. The role is suited to someone with urgent/emergency care experience, particularly in paediatrics, to join a dedicated team of Paediatric Emergency Nurse Practitioners.

The role is a full-time contract designed to develop your skills and knowledge in the management of injured children and to support progression toward autonomous paediatric practice. The position may start at Band 6 with a pathway to Band 7 as skills and practice are established. Applications are welcome from those currently working toward a practitioner role with appropriate paediatric acute experience and minor injury/illness expertise.

We welcome applications from those who currently hold UK NMC registration. We are not currently direct hiring Internationally Qualified Nurses requiring sponsorship.

Main duties of the job

Responsibilities include autonomous assessment/examination, planning of care, and discharge/refer of children aged 0-16 years presenting with injuries or minor illness. Duties include:

  • Primary wound closure.
  • Management of limb/digit fractures and deformities including plastering and splinting.
  • Requesting and interpreting X-rays.
  • Referral of patients to speciality services.
  • Role modelling and education of the wider departmental MDT.

Job responsibilities

Role Summary

  • Autonomously assess, investigate, diagnose, treat and refer or discharge children and young people attending the Emergency Department within the ENP scope and Trust guidelines.
  • Maintain accountability, authority, and responsibility to ensure a high quality, patient-centred service.
  • Act as an effective role model and provide clinical expertise within the department.
  • Provide specialist knowledge to patients and staff in paediatric injuries in the Emergency Department.

Where appropriate, work within the CED team on professional nursing issues and clinical governance. Participate in educational and training programmes for junior staff, including doctors. Support Matron and senior staff to deliver high quality, patient-focused care in the Childrens Emergency Department. The post holder will work flexibly to achieve key responsibilities.

Person Specification

Essential

  • Relevant experience of working independently as an ENP/NP in urgent/emergency care.
  • Relevant physical assessment/minor injuries course.
  • NMC registration or equivalent.

Desirable

  • Experience of working clinically with children.
  • Evidence of clinical decision making (qualifications/competencies).
