Overview

Paediatric Consultant Radiologist

Job Plan Commitment: 10 PA

The posts are full-time, but part-time applications will be considered. The Radiology department is well-equipped with two 128-slice Siemens CT scanners, two 1.5T Siemens MRI scanners, digital screening rooms, updated US machines, a recently installed SPECT CT, and a new dual-source Cardiac CT scanner. CT and MRI vans/static scanners support additional workload at our Community Diagnostic Centre in West Swindon. The Breast Centre hosts the Wiltshire Breast Screening Service for Swindon, North and West Wiltshire, screening nearly 100,000 ladies over a three-year cycle, with two screening vans and a static facility at the Great Western Hospital. A symptomatic service is provided for Swindon and Wiltshire, with Hologic mammography units with tomosynthesis and a forthcoming contrast-enhanced mammography (CEM) service. Localisations are usually performed with Magseed.

The Radiology team is collaborative and supportive, and there is a private practice operated as a co-operative within the department.

Responsibilities
  • Multidisciplinary team work is a key component of the Trust, with MDT discussions involving colleagues from across services.
  • Develop sub-specialty interests that align with Directorate needs and the Trust’s strategic direction.
  • Conduct teaching, examination, and accreditation duties, contributing to undergraduate, postgraduate, and continuing medical education activities.
  • Support the Lead Clinician in policy and strategy development as a senior member of the Directorate Management Team.
  • Lead and participate in the leadership and development of the specialty under the direction of the Lead Clinician and Associate Medical Director.
  • Ensure effective communication and staff involvement across the Directorate, supporting the General Manager to achieve objectives.
  • Collaborate with colleagues in other Directorates within the Trust.
  • Assist in cost-effective utilisation of resources, including equipment and drugs, within budgets.
  • Contribute to Clinical Governance and Risk, including development of clinical policies and adherence to standing orders and financial procedures.
  • Work within the Trust’s framework for governance and risk management as applicable to the Directorate.
Qualifications
  • CCST or CCT in Radiology; trained in all aspects of the specialty.
  • Experience in paediatric imaging and radiology practices is expected; involvement in teaching and accreditation activities is desirable.
Working Arrangements & Benefits
  • On-call system with consultant presence from 08:00–20:00, Monday to Friday, and 4 hours on Saturday and Sunday; consultants may be on-call for an additional 4 hours on weekends. Outside of these hours, support is provided by an outsourced reporting service.
  • Option for home-working computers to be set up.
  • We are involved in establishing a Community Diagnostic Centre and the West of England Imaging Network.

All medical staff in each Directorate are accountable through their Lead Clinician to the Associate Medical Director, who has overall responsibility for Directorate services. Consultants are key members of the Directorate team and lead service improvements to enhance patient experience.
