A multinational food manufacturer, which is home to some of the most loved brands in Britain, has a key opening within its in-house packaging division. As a key member of the factory Technical team, the Packaging Technologist will ensure effective day-to-day management of packaging used on site; providing technical support to site-based projects, including managing transit testing, trailing new packaging materials, and supporting process investigations.

You will seek opportunities, within packaging or process, for increasing plant efficiencies, reducing waste levels, and costs. The role will demand you to work to tight timescales in a constantly evolving and developing environment and be able to work on your own initiatives.

This role is available initially on a fixed-term basis for 6 months

Key responsibilities include:
  • Coordinate and support packaging implementation projects across the factory product portfolio.
  • Implement changes to material specifications to improve packaging consistency and performance, meeting standards for quality, functionality, cost-effectiveness, consumer acceptance, stability, regulatory compliance, and operational feasibility.
  • Support day-to-day project execution within the Technical team: establish packaging materials & dimensions in coordination with the site technical team, suppliers, and the Origination team.
  • Create packaging prototypes/mockups based on briefs to illustrate possibilities.
  • Develop new outer cases/SRPs and pallet configurations.
  • Approve artworks promptly, communicating issues to your manager.
  • Support packaging trials, leading documentation such as cutter guides, pallet patterns, component drawings, specifications, standards, test results, trial protocols, and reports.
  • Represent the site’s technical team at supplier reviews when required, driving improvements and working with vendors to resolve issues.
  • Assist in process capability assessments of equipment.
  • Identify opportunities for continuous improvement.
  • Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations, COSHH, HACCP, and product specifications during trials.
Requirements for this role:

Essential:

  • Degree or equivalent in a technical field.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
  • Experience in packaging, preferably in FMCG.
  • Basic knowledge of flexible and corrugated packaging materials.
  • Experience with line trials and transit testing.
  • Strong time management skills.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Understanding of packaging's role in line efficiency.

Preferred:

  • Knowledge of Cape, AutoCAD, and Adobe CS.
  • Understanding of BOPP, folding cartons, tins, and thermoformed packaging.
  • Experience with packaging equipment and validation of new materials.
  • Liaison with packaging suppliers.
  • Broader business understanding.
  • Excellent interpersonal, presentation, and analytical skills.
