We have an opportunity for broadcast journalists at Good Morning Britain to take on the role of Overnight News / Bulletin Editor. This job will put you right at the heart of the dynamic team who put together three hours of live television every morning; setting the agenda with informative, engaging content and reporting on the issues that matter.

As News Editor you will be responsible for staying across the news agenda both at home and abroad, spotting great stories, booking guests and handling breaking news. You will brief producers and deploy correspondents. You will work closely with our programme editors, senior news editor, bulletin editors and programme organisers, as well our colleagues at ITN and in the ITV regional newsrooms.

As Bulletin Editor you will craft our news bulletins each morning, choosing the most interesting and important stories for our viewers. You will work to maintain and enhance GMB’s commitment to diverse coverage by finding new voices and championing underrepresented stories. You will help our reporters and correspondents write the very best scripts and be experienced in story selection. You will have the ability to communicate and give instructions effectively, make good judgement calls and work effectively as part of a team.

This is an overnight role working to a fixed roster pattern where half the shifts are News Editor and half the shifts are Bulletin Editor. It includes Sundays and bank holidays. Each shift is 14 hours long.

Some Of The Key Responsibilities Are As Follows:
  • Decide and shape the day’s news agenda – both home and foreign
  • Commission and pursue stories
  • Brief and deploy reporters, correspondents, producers and crews
  • Script fresh and informative news bulletins crafting great VTs, links and graphics and making the best use of pictures
  • Make informed legal, health and safety judgements
  • Manage resources to ensure all stories are adequately covered
  • Take a lead role in encouraging talent and developing skills and experience of newer members of the team

To be considered for this opportunity you will need to demonstrate the following skills:

(Minimum Role Criteria)
  • Proven track-record as a News or Bulletin Editor
  • Sound editorial judgement and comprehensive understanding of Ofcom’s Broadcasting Code as well as the law as it relates to broadcasters
  • An ability to work to tight and demanding deadlines under pressure
  • A thorough knowledge of news and current affairs in the UK, Europe and internationally
  • Experience of making judgements on matters of great editorial sensitivity and the ability to prioritise and interpret the key stories of the day
  • An ability to communicate effectively with reporters, correspondents and other members of the editorial and production teams
  • Confident and quick user of broadcast software, preferably iNews. Avid editing experience would be advantageous
  • Accurate writing to deadline is essential
