Job summary

SP Electricity North West is recruiting an Overhead Lines Trainer to design, deliver and evaluate training for employees and contractors across the network up to 33kV. The role combines classroom style learning with practical field coaching to build competence and safety.

You’ll assess through trade testing, maintain records, and support authorisation frameworks while working with internal teams and suppliers. A City & Guilds Level 2 and LV Live Line experience are essential.

Qualifications

  • A minimum City & Guilds Level 2 qualification, or an equivalent recognised qualification.
  • Proven LV Live Line operational experience.
  • Strong knowledge of overhead line operations and safe working practices within a regulated environment.
  • A thorough understanding of operational safety rules, codes of practice and relevant legislation, including the Electricity at Work Regulations.
  • Experience of assessing competence through practical assessments, evaluations or trade testing.
  • The ability to coach, mentor and support the development of others, including employees, apprentices and contractors with varying levels of experience.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, with the ability to explain technical information clearly and adapt your approach to different audiences.
  • Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage competing priorities effectively.
  • Good digital and IT skills, including experience of using systems to manage training, assessments or competence records.
  • A proactive approach, strong attention to detail and a commitment to maintaining high standards of safety, quality and professionalism.
  • A full UK driving licence.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, deliver and evaluate engaging training solutions that support the development of employees and contractors working across SP Electricity North West.
  • Assess and support individuals through trade testing and competence assessments, helping them prepare for authorisation and career progression opportunities.
  • Deliver a variety of technical and operational training programmes that meet business needs and support ongoing professional development.
  • Provide field-based coaching, mentoring and practical guidance to help colleagues build and maintain the skills, knowledge and confidence needed to perform their roles safely and effectively.
  • Carry out assurance activities, including internal audits of Live Line Rubber Glove Teams, helping to maintain high standards of safety and operational excellence.
  • Create, review and maintain training materials, presentations, learning resources and records, ensuring content remains accurate, relevant and aligned with current legislation, company policies and industry best practice.
  • Maintain accurate and comprehensive training and assessment records to support competence management and authorisation processes.
  • Contribute to the development and continuous improvement of authorisation frameworks, assessments and role requirements for overhead line operations.
  • Support the delivery of competence and authorisation processes through training, practical assessments, trade testing and professional recommendations.
  • Work closely with internal teams, manufacturers and suppliers as a key point of contact for overhead line personal protective equipment, climbing equipment and specialist tools.
  • Contribute to the development, review and implementation of policies, standards and guidance that support safe and effective overhead line operations.
  • Act as a trusted subject matter expert, providing technical advice, sharing best practice and supporting innovation and continuous improvement initiatives across the business.
  • Support investigations, learning reviews and improvement activities, helping the organisation identify opportunities to enhance safety, performance and operational effectiveness.
  • Deliver all training activities in line with SP Electricity North West health and safety requirements, ensuring appropriate risk assessments and control measures are in place to create a safe learning environment.

A Fantastic Opportunity: Overhead Lines Trainer

As an Overhead Lines Instructor, you will play a key role in developing the skills, knowledge and confidence of our people and contractor workforce. You will design, develop and deliver high-quality technical training and assessments for overhead line activities, including both live and dead working up to and including 33kV.

Working with employees, apprentices and contractors, you will help create a safe and supportive learning environment where individuals can build their competence and perform their roles effectively. You will ensure training aligns with company policies, safety requirements, codes of practice and industry standards, helping to maintain the highest standards of safety and operational performance across the network.

The role also involves providing practical coaching, trade testing, field-based assessments and technical expertise to support continuous improvement and the safe delivery of overhead line activities.
